It only happens in the States
When Bill Clinton ended his term in office, his traditional parting gifts included granting pardons to a number of felons including those from the Whitewater Scandal, former Cabinet members, Heiress Patricia Hearst Shaw and his own brother Roger Clinton.
These pardons were far more numerous in number and applying to a wider selection of criminals (around 400 in total) than that of any other president before him.
Another two pardons were allocated to Susan Rosenberg, a member of the radical group "The Weather Underground" who had been charged with weapons charges, conspiracy in the Brink's armoured truck robbery during which two Police Officers and a Security guard was killed and also her partner, Linda Sue Evans who was given 40 year sentence for attempting to bomb the Capitol in 1983. The Washington Post.
It may surprise you - but Do you know where Susan Rosenberg is today?

Ah!Bless she was convicted of being a Saint. She just happened to be wandering around by the Capitol with her colleague, who was carrying explosives - which no doubt was being considered as a potential future cure for covid - So what has she done with the payout for wrongful arrest I wonder?
I wonder if the relatives of those who died du her actions would be as sympathetic?

…contemporary US domestic terrorism threats
Historical context is absolutely paramount.
…The important thing is just to realize that there are some similarities, but these are very different periods in time and each period of time is unique.
Your smarmy "Ah!Bless …" is wasted here, said.
I do not condone political violence in any circumstances.
Contemporary US domestic terrorist threats are primarily from the authoritarian and racially motivated end of the political spectrum. Your home turf appears to be web sites reflecting their views. You certainly have a penchant for importing their memes into this forum.
p.s. Good of you to post the Smithsonian Magazine link. I recommend you read it.

Trump on the other hand, decided to have a killing spree, executing as many people as he could, before leaving office. He will go down in history, alas for all the wrong reasons.

Susan Rosenberg is an example of far left 'terrorists' and you are of the opinion that domestic 'terrorism' lies on the far right - there are many examples of far left 'terrorism' like that of Ms. Roseberg in the US, but it is not covered so extensively as that of right or far right terrorism because the media has been nucleated with the idea of socialism being the desired outcome. (Socialism has failed in every country worldwide and should not be fostered.)
There is no such title as 'terrorist' one is either a peaceful citizen with an aim to live in harmony with your neighbours, or you are a person who gains satisfaction in violence due to a lack of focus in life. The first is a law abiding citizen, the second is a criminal - innocent people are being harmed or killed.
To fool people into believing that their violence is for the good of all and pretending to themselves that they are Freedom Fighters is a complete fallacy. They engage in violence for their own personal gratification because they are too weak to have any other cause of virtual superiority, or indeed, any other focus in life. They group together for strength and find a cause - they are not sincere in the chosen cause because they themselves violate that which they claim to stand for.
The US has itself created the problems they now face - there are a few hundred groups of 'terrorists' holding the general public to ransom, aided by an all too correct institution. This liberalism is a very dangerous path to take, more and more people in the states are purchasing guns for protection which can only lead to unnecessary death and destruction. High time for the states to sort out their own back yard before walking into others. Time to Man up and to get tough! By incorporating liberalism is like using a feather to beat a bully.
'Terrorism' has been going on for centuries. Without terrorism, Politician's would be forced to accept their own failures.

If you go seeking the extremes, you'll quite likely 'meet yourself coming back'
Susan Rosenberg was convicted 35 years ago. White supremacist weapon fetishists are doing all the running these days.

It is not waffle, my friend - all violent protestors are criminal in the USA for they violate other people's constitutional rights.

Perhaps someone would be good enough to offer a second opinion?

There are extremists and nutters on all sides of the political divide.
Violence and rioting is usually attached to the left.
That was the notable difference about the spontaneous storming of Congress first it was unusual for the right and then the frightening reality that if the gun-toting crazies were actually incited to riot the outcome could be horrendous.

You're using Trump tactics here, repeat something repeatedly and hopefully it becomes fact, how do you come up with "violence and rioting is usually attached to the left" usual garbage, most of the disturbances leading to violence have not been political at all.
I will agree that extremists of all shades exist, whether political, religious or just plain nutters, they are all dangerous and must be combatted.

"Spontaneous"
Good God
Was being planned since at least December 20, and cultivated by Trump on numerous occasions.
