The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rainfall expected late on Wednesday and into Thursday of this week.

The warning covers Sefton and means that disruption to transport and flooding is likely.

Last week’s severe weather resulted in flood alerts in the Maghull and Formby areas of Sefton, and residents were supported at a temporary rest centre when river levels were dangerously high. As a result of the prolonged rainfall, much of the ground is still saturated in the area.

Sefton Council is monitoring forecasts to put necessary measures in place to protect residents and properties from any potential risk.

The Council has distributed its sandbag supplies to residents across the Borough already affected by last week’s weather warnings, and is urging residents who might be concerned about flood risk to ensure they have a stock of sandbags which can be bought from builders merchants or DIY shops.

Other flood preparations that residents might want to consider whilst the weather warning is in place:

Find out your own risk of flooding before a flood happens. Floods can happen anywhere, and it is important to remember you don’t need to live by water to be at risk of flooding. Visit the government’s flood warning information service online or call Floodline on 0345 988 1188.

If you are in an at-risk area sign up for flood warning messages from the Environment Agency’s Floodline online or by calling: 0345 988 1188
Make a personal Flood Plan for what you will do if there is a flood. It could be used if you’re required to leave the house quickly for other risks.

Think what you would take if you needed to evacuate and consider where everything could be kept.
Anyone concerned about flooding can find further advice on flood risk and what to do to protect their property on the Flood Hub website or Sefton Council website.

Residents can report flooding on a public highway or any blocked road gullies on the Sefton Council website using an online reporting form.

Should anyone end up with flood water in their property, they should report this to flooding@sefton.gov.uk with any photos to accompany the report.

Reporting incidents will ensure that the Council can understand the extent and location of properties affected by incidents of flooding and allow officers to work with other flood risk management authorities to help reduce the risks and consequences of future flooding.

Roads may become impassable across the Borough later this week due to heavy rainfall, and people are urged to only go out if it’s essential. Accidents happen in fast flowing water so avoid walking or driving near floodwater and residents are reminded that there could be hidden dangers like sharp objects or raised manhole covers beneath the water.

Exceptional rainfall events used to be a rare occurrence - but thanks to climate change, it looks like they're becoming a weekly thing.

Climate change, perhaps we should stop cutting down trees that feed the smoky old wood burners that you pedal to the public, and then carry around in your smoky old diesel van.

Duh. Fact is, nobody ever plants a commercial crop if there's no demand for it.....Buy more logs and you will encourage more tree planting. If people buy none, the market for logs will collapse - and no more trees will go in the ground!

Btw, the business runs both petrol and diesel vehicles. Personal transport here (when not cycling) is via electric traction. Be interested to hear what you're running on?

I’m sick of reading all the bulls**t you come out with.
Btw, I drive a German car, 1.9 diesel, 2020 model, Euro 6, and overall, far cleaner overall than anything electric or hybrid out there.

    A) What bs? Would you shell out to buy acres of land, plant 1000's trees on it - and never harvest that crop to get your return on it? Of course not, nobody would.

If you do want more trees, I believe there are volunteer schemes where you can help plant up permanent woodlands. Could be just the thing?

    B) Your car may be 'clean', i.e. emit less smoke than other vehicles. But it must be putting out tons of CO2 per year. My pushbike emits zero CO2. My 'leccy vehicle (2020 model year) also emits zero CO2.

While electric vehicles themselves don’t emit CO2, don’t forget that the generators that produce it do!

Fair comment. But let's not forget, an increasing proportion of our grid supply comes from renewables, e.g. windfarms.

They nevet tell you how much the carbon footprint is regarding mining the ore. Transporting it to the refinery. Producing the steel. Making it into the turbines. Transporting the turbines. Installing them. Commisioning them. Ongoing maintenance. Its nonsence. No such thing as perpetual motion. All it is is leaving problems for future generations. When was the last time the turbine spun at the eco centre ?

Everything has a carbon footprint, even a pair of shoes does. Because shoe leather comes from cows, which fart methane gas....Wind turbine towers do cost carbon to manufacture, but that stops after installation. Whereas a fossil-fuel car not only costs carbon to manufacture - it keeps on emitting right through its lifetime.

Of course, all those carbon inputs apply to oil refining, manufacturing generally, Hinckley Point C

Hinkley Point C nuclear power station
    …so on and so forth

Worse, GHG emissions are NOT the only deadly legacy of our affluent lifestyles!

Not forgetting Drax, the UK's biggest power station.

Now, instead of being mostly coal fired. it uses wood pellets, great you may think but !

Those pellets originate from timber in Canada, the trees are felled, transported to a factory, where the timber is processed (cut up, dried and made into pellets. Those pellets are shipped by dedicated trains to a harbour, where they are transferred to dedicated bulk carriers and shipped to the UK,

But it doesn't end there, its then transferred to a dedicated train, to travel on to Drax, almost EVERY DAY!

So, almost identical logistics to when Drax was coalfired, except they're now transporting a renewable (re-growable) fuel from overseas instead of a fossil fuel. Far less sulphur in wood than coal too, so less acid rain produced.

Several other examples of coalfired power stations are now out of the fossil fuel equation - due, happily, to their being decommissioned.
