A spokesperson for Merseyrail commented...
We can confirm that a person has been hit by a train at Fisherman's Path level crossing which is by Freshfield Train Station yesterday evening.
Our deepest sympathies are with the families and the train driver at this sad time

Take for what, closure?
As tragic as it is, If someone is so intent on taking their life, they’ll just do it somewhere else. The vast majority of deaths here are suicides.

There's no cameras there. They did close the crossing a few years ago, but it reopened after a petition.

Why don't Network Rail just provide a hooter as a warning when a train will pass?

It's been a place used for years by those wanting to commit suicide. (Someone I was at school with committed suicide there in 1986).
While unfortunately deaths seem to occur there fairly regularly. I have only heard of one that was accidental.
If someone has reached such a low place, that they think this is the only way out, tragically I think it would be to late for a hooter.

A hooter may help stop an accident but very few of these incidents are accidents.

I know they do have cameras on board, but whether there’s anything pointing forwards or not, I don’t.
What I do know is that it’s one of the faster parts of the whole line and trains coming from Ainsdale are pretty much at full speed on the approach to the crossing. The crossing is on a long sweeping bend and by the time that the poor driver sees anyone, they have absolutely no chance of stopping.

I rather think they do. Isn't it standard practice for there to be a "W" sign a specified distance either side of such level crossings?
The sad fact is that these are almost always suicides not accidents.

Well accidents and suicides common at places where there are no cameras just don’t sit perfectly right with me. My heart goes out to the families of people that have committed suicide.

At least 3 people have died on Merseyrail since 14th of january. What is to be expected when young people are loosing jobs. Loosing homes. All in an effort to protect people in their 80s ? People who have hade long lives. No problem finding a job or getting on the property ladder. Young people have it hard. They conned into thinking going to uni and getting a degree in media studies or free style knitting will lead to a prosperous future. Open the country up now and give the younger folk a chance.

The 7 day average for deaths related to Corona virus in Sefton currently stands at over 1100. They were not all in their 80’s. And so what if they were? Are you saying the lives of those aged 80+ are not worthy of being saved?
And it’s losing, not loosing. Loser.

No,Merseyrail trains don't have forward facing cameras. The new stock probably will.
Trust me from the moment a driver sees someone on the line and throws the brake on at the 60mph linespeed there's no way that they can stop.
Forward facing cameras will capture fully the sad event but won't help to prevent it
