Birkdale Conservative Lee Durkin is pursuing a series of
improvements on behalf of residents at a busy thoroughfare as part of
his continued work in the community.


He has continued to liaise with residents during the pandemic, and is
hoping to see a number of simple yet vital improvements made to
Guildford Road after receiving volumes of help requests from
residents there.


Mr. Durkin is proposing that the southern island adjoining Carr Lane
is firstly made safer for residents when entering and exiting the site to
park there, in addition to the flower planters being restored to ensure
greater longevity.


Mr. Durkin said: “During 2020 I was contacted increasingly by
residents across Guildford Road. As someone who passes through the
area for work on a daily basis, I have seen first-hand the need for
major improvement across a huge area of Guildford Road and I am
now looking to have many of these issues finally resolved.”


He added: “Targeting first the island at the bottom of Guildford Road,
parking on the pavement and in front of driveways has been a hazard
and an inconvenience to many residents. I would like to see this
junction made safer for pedestrians and motorists through improved
signage and perhaps minor alteration to the island itself.


“I also want to see planters cleaned and better maintained to achieve
better cost-effeciveness for the Council and encourage increased
planting of flowers throughout the year.”


“I have been contacted by residents across this main road which
covers a considerable distance through Birkdale and I felt that it was
only right to raise these issues on their behalf.”


“I will be putting these suggestions to the relevant council officers
and pursuing a number of additional matters in the area that have been
brought to my attention, however, given the significance of health &
safety I have chosen to prioritize this first.

Great ideas, one simple question for Lee.

How would the improvements be funded?

Would you increase Council tax
or would you reduce existing spend elsewhere ?
If the latter what spending would you reduce?

It’s immaterial really, given that Council Tax will undoubtedly rise, and services provided will be reduced. Meanwhile, Councillors and Chiefs of staff will without doubt entrench their noses even deeper into the trough.

When such a simple issue is made into an article the length of War and Peace one can only assume that his press releases are being written by David Barton.

Ha ha the residents there love the extra parking on that busy junction and park with respect to each other and not on the pavement so people can easily pass, it’s obviously safer than half on half off the road if you want to put flowers in the planters then great, should be relatively cheap and easy. Maybe one old lady without a car might complain but saying residents have approached you about this is unlikely and non specific and that sentence could easily be made up. Maybe find something better to get attention this is a poor effort .

A prospective councillor making something up? Surely you must be mistaken, they are all (across the whole political spectrum!), such fine upstanding pillars of the community!

I wish him and any other prospective councillor all the best of luck regardless of party but looking for attention using this ... really?.... I bet if he lived there he would love the parking .

The only problems I’ve ever seen with parking on Guildford Rd are at tea time when the chippy is open on the corner of Kew Rd. There is some pretty ridiculous parking going on then, often right on the corner of the junction making it difficult/dangerous when buses have to negotiate the turn.

I assume that today is idiot standing on a corner day. The clueless conservative candidiates seem to have one every other week.

Perhaps this one is saving up his pocket money to do something useful?

I think he’s about 40, so many 40 year olds get pocket money? How old should a councillor be before you deem them “useful” and “not an idiot” as we have many older ones who come across as useless and helpless because “Bootle Labour won’t let them” but have managed to cling on for over a decade by pushing the protest vote..... I personally see that as not very useful for Southport.
