The controversial cycle lane that runs the length of Hoghton Street has been destroyed. All of the plastic bollards that were placed into the road surface to create the cycle lane have been knocked out of the ground outside the YMCA.

What a waste of time and money.

Whether you believe they're a waste of time and money is irrelevant, it is pure vandalism, and in the end will cost even more money and resources to fix, at a time when resources are limited due to ongoing pandemic.

    I applaud your wonderful journalism......

Yes it will entail spending MORE money replacing something that marked out an area unused by the very people it was designed to accommodate, but then it does provide a little light relief for the progeny of the braindead.

And if you replace them they'll go again, and again, and again, and again. They are way too flimsy. Never-ending extra costs. Pointless.

(Wait for the usual cycling suspects to shoot me down in flames now)

people need to contact the council about it, then if anyone has an accident and they have not been replaced its the councils fault for not replacing them.

Once motorists realised how easy they were to unscrew, this was inevitable. But it does them no good, because regardless of bollards those lanes are 'no-parking', meaning fines for anyone who does try and park.

I doubt it's motorists 'unscrewing' them, so don't add fuel to the motorists v cyclists that this is likely to end up as, it's more likely to have been morons walking past thinking how clever they are.

There's no need to unscrew them, they're designed to collapse with impact. Unfortunately, the local simple minded half-wits know this and seem to think it's good 'sport'.

They may be flimsy (and as a cyclist, I think the cycle lane on Hoghton Street is pointless), but why do you feel the childish need to stir things up with your last sentence?

It's NOT an area that's unused. I use it regularly and I often see other cyclists using it!

I agree however, that this stretch isn't the best use of resources, unless, as you've pointed out, it's been provided for those from the shallow end of the gene pool for some entertainment.

I cycle and think they are a waste of taxpayers cash for my minority pursuit,

but do not think anyone other than those who vandalised them is to blame.

The same mindless idiots vandalise windows on Lord Street, put graffiti up, damage trees, cars, etc without any prompting.

Or should I consider any vandalism on my car the fault of cycle lane proponents such as yourself and the Eco hypocrite PNP?

Yes, they will 'pop' out under impact, but also come out/go back in, by applying a half-turn. It's easy enough to pick up stray ones and screw them back into their fixed base.

    As for the culprits, consider:

    1. Which group would stand to gain from their removal, pedestrians, cyclists or motorists?

    2. Which group has been making the most noise complaining about them, pedestrians, cyclists or motorists?

    3. The majority have disappeared from outside locations where motorists in particular would benefit the most from their removal.

    4. Pubs etc are shut, so the usual 'merry' types on foot, who might do daft stuff, are not currently walking home at night.

    5. Kids/'morons' are (or should be) at home and locked down.

    6. Motorists regularly turn 20mph signs sideways at entrance to 20mph streets.

    7. Motorists regularly turn cycle-route signs around, to misdirect riders.

    8. Motorists regularly remove 'community concern speed area' signs.

While it's impossible, without CCTV footage, to completely rule-out 'mindless vandals', I know who my money is on!

    Think your numbering is wrong. 1 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 3, 7 ?

Where's your proof for the last 3 items?

We do seem to suffer from much mindless vandalism in Southport.

If only we could catch them, fine them or provide other apporopriate punishment
