Lee Durkin is celebrating upon learning that his plea for Cycle Lanes / routes to be diverted away from the main Village have been forwarded by the local Liberal Democrat Councillors after a long campaign beginning last summer.
Mr. Durkin who originally raised the prospect of the Birkdale Lib Dem team supporting Cycle Lanes / routes through Birkdale and its interconnecting side streets, such as Alma Road back in June 2020 is pleased to see the sitting Lib Dem Councillors now take a complete U-turn and back his call at Council.
Mr. Durkin said: “During 2020 I was contacted more and more by residents across the Birkdale area that had been outraged by the out of touch stance taken by the Lib Dems here who previously praised the idea of cycle lanes / routes through Birkdale. As someone that has communicated with numerous residents now about the subject, I have seen first-hand how foolish it would have been to pursue this, but I am glad that Cllr. Shaw has finally woken up to the actual needs of the people here!”
He added: “After months of me saying that these cycle lanes / routes could severely damage Birkdale Village’s businesses, the Lib Dems have at last followed behind me. In asking for clarification on the potential cycle routes through the village, Cllr Shaw could have acted much sooner on this topic, but I guess better late than never.”
“I hope that the clarifications can now help ease any tension that residents and business owners may have had since last summer.”

So the cycle lanes which may or may not have been proposed to go through the village may or may not still be going the village but the elected Lib Dem councillor just happens to agree with the prospective Conservative candidate that they don't want them going through the village.
As victories go it seems to be on the small side of microscopic but I suppose getting Simon Shaw to agree with you is some sort of achievement, though I won't be surprised if Mr Shaw denies it all on Facebook.

Does that even make sense?
If Mr Durkin thinks that his non-existent cycle lanes have been "diverted", maybe he could tell us what route he now thinks they are going to follow?
It appears that his mythical 'lanes' are dissolving into what they always were i.e. 'routes' - duh!
On-road cycle-lanes through the village, would clearly have meant doing away with on-road parking, making for a really great scare story. Whipping up a massive outcry from all the business owners and local motorists, was clearly the plan.
A cycle-route requires nothing more, than installing a small blue cyclist direction sign, helping riders identify where a route goes. It's doubtful non-cycling residents would even notice it was there!

I doubt very much that the cyclists would notice them. Cyclists don't normally take any notice of signs. They normally do what they want - when they want and totally ignore other road and pavement users.

You could say the same about motorists in general, which is why there are so many caught out be speed cameras!
