Asna Tabassum, a graduating senior at USC, was selected as valedictorian and offered a traditional slot to speak at the 2024 graduation. After groups on and off campus criticized the decision and the university said it received threats, it canceled her speech. | (Genaro Molina / Los Angeles Times) |

Hundreds of Jewish anti-war demonstrators have been arrested during a Passover seder that doubled as a protest in New York, as they shut down a major thoroughfare to pray for a ceasefire and urge the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, to end US military aid to Israel.
The 300 or so arrests took place on Tuesday night at Grand Army Plaza, on the doorstep of Schumer’s Brooklyn residence, where thousands of mostly Jewish New Yorkers gathered for the seder, a ritual that marked the second night of the holiday celebrated as a festival of freedom by Jews worldwide.
The seder came just before the US Senate resoundingly passed a military package that includes $26bn for Israel.

Many of those students didn’t know for what they are demonstrating.
Peer pressure.

- You assert this on the basis of what information?
Have you direct knowledge in addition to media reports?
and
- Supposing it true for some, you would have them "Expelled not suspended".
How do you justify that?
I anticipate you will concede that your remark was overwrought.

ISTANBUL (AP) — A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.
…
Speaking to the AP in Istanbul, Al-Hayya said Hamas wants to join the Palestine Liberation Organization, headed by the rival Fatah faction, to form a unified government for Gaza and the West Bank. He said Hamas would accept “a fully sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and the return of Palestinian refugees in accordance with the international resolutions,” along Israel’s pre-1967 borders.
If that happens, he said, the group’s military wing would dissolve.
“All the experiences of people who fought against occupiers, when they became independent and obtained their rights and their state, what have these forces done? They have turned into political parties and their defending fighting forces have turned into the national army,” he said.
…
And, he said, Israeli attempts to eradicate Hamas would ultimately fail to prevent future Palestinian armed uprisings.
“Let’s say that they have destroyed Hamas. Are the Palestinian people gone?” he asked.

— Arguably incredible; but it does demonstrate that Hamas is not a monolith. |

I am so glad that I read the small print!

"ISTANBUL, Turkey — A senior member of Hamas’s Qatar-based politburo said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that the terrorist group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.
However, in separate comments published by the London-based Arabic paper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, the same official, Khalil al-Hayya, indicated this would only be a temporary stance and that the Palestinians retain their “historic right to all Palestinian lands.”
Al-Hayya also specified in the AP interview that the envisaged Palestinian state would necessitate “the return of Palestinian refugees” to today’s Israel. The Palestinian demand for a so-called “right of return” provides for up to six million descendants of refugees entering Israel — a demand dismissed by Israel as seeking to destroy it as a Jewish majority state.
Al-Hayya’s comments came amid a stalemate in months of talks for a truce and a hostage release. The suggestion that Hamas could disarm appeared to mark a potential departure by the terror group, which is officially committed to Israel’s destruction."

Actually I’m one of the calmest folks you can meet. At my age I appreciate truth and seeing things as they are.
I have watched clips of an interviewer asking students if they know why they are demonstrating and what started it.
I try not to CP, as it does get a little boring for other readers, who obviously read the papers and watch tv.
Those Columbia University students have gone beyond demonstrating , they have literally gone too far.
The University has told their Jewish Students and Professors not to bother to turn up to the University. Was this to appease the demonstrators or is the now functioning directive ,showing their antisemitism.
These delinquent students are the future of world democracy. This is not democracy when they are chanting for support of Hamas.
Would you like a world of Hamas ?
Yes I mean expelled.
There has to be a criteria as to how far students can go and should they be allowed to rule the leaders of their University.
Where is their respect for authority.
If Hamas had any feelings for their people (ha ha ha) they would have returned those hostages months earlier..they reject every proposal.
People forget how these terrorists work.
Would Britain tolerate 1400 murdered young people enjoying an outdoor
festival? I don’t think so. I’m shocked that people continue to ignore what started all this war.
Hamas knew exactly what the repercussions would be, and how it would affect the Palestinian community.
Myself, I am really sorry that it all has turned into a senseless battle of losing life. On both sides.
There are no winners in war.
A whole Community, 350,000 people have been evacuated in Northern Israel. They have had their town destroyed by another terror group Hizbollah.
Hizbollah have destroyed Lebanon and turned it into a frightening place to live.

"Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, is blocking a deal to release Israeli hostages, the Biden administration has said.
An agreement to release the 133 hostages depended on “one guy”, an unnamed official said, in a change of tone from previous White House statements that have suggested that Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, is delaying the process.
It came as 18 world leaders, including Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden, signed a joint letter urging Hamas to release the captives it has held for more than 200 days.
The official, who was not authorised to discuss the matter publicly, criticised Hamas officials for taking part in negotiations when only Sinwar, the leader of the terrorist group’s military wing, dictates policy.
“Ultimately Sinwar is the guy who says ‘yes’ or ‘no’,” they said.
Israeli media on Thursday evening reported that Egypt, a key mediator between Israel and Hamas, had offered a new ceasefire proposal to a visiting Israeli delegation.
Egyptian officials have suggested Israel agree to cancel the Rafah offensive and pledge a one-year ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, according to Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
An Egyptian delegation is expected in Israel on Friday to push the deal further.
Late on Wednesday, Hamas released the first proof-of-life videos for 24-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin who was captured in southern Israel on Oct 7. The dual Israeli-US national appeared pale and distressed.
“Sinwar made the decision he’d rather hold him and others rather than secure the ceasefire in Gaza – that’s the truth of the situation,” the US official said, adding that it appears that Sinwar, one of the masterminds of the Oct 7 massacre, “seems determined to simply sit underground holding hostages, totally impervious to the conditions above ground for the people of Gaza”.

I am really disgusted that there isn’t enough pressure put on Sinwar to release those hostages. Then we can see the end of suffering on both sides of the border.
I believe that by releasing those hostages that the truth will come out as to how they were treated .this Hamas don’t want it known. .repeated rapes ( also the males)and torture.
Israel have caught many Hamas terrorists and they are singing like canaries about what is happening to the hostages.
