    It's not a car though.
When I replace my car I want a single vehicle that is suitable for all the journeys that I currently make by car (weekly shop, family days out, holidays).
This plainly isn't suitable for anything other than the weekly shop.
I wouldn't spend £6k on a second hand car so I'm not going to spend £6k on a glorified golf buggy with limited use.
I'd like to replace my car with an electric one eventually but I can't see me buying a brand new one and the battery life of second hand ones is an as yet unknown quantity.

Clearly not the 'car' for you. But for someone living alone, who only makes short trips, it has a lot going for it.

As if! You have to make an upfront payment on a car lease. I checked the amount on the Ami. It's €2,644, which includes the deduction of a €900 local subsidy.

I’ve just ordered a new car, it is due for delivery next month, have I gone for all electric- no
I’ve decided to go for a “hybrid” petrol / electric, 5 year warranty (10 years or 150,000 miles on the hybrid battery)

Why not all electric - because the infrastructure just isn’t there and there are no real signs that it’s going to be in the foreseeable future. I don’t fancy being stranded looking for a working charging point.

As for the Citroen, there probably is a market for it, based on price alone, if all you need it for is nipping to the shops, going to church on a Sunday it will probably suffice, but little else.

I certainly wouldn’t like to be in one is anything substantial ran into the back of you.

    Very restrictive though.
I always considered that the benefit of your own personal vehicle was the freedom to go wherever you wanted to whenever you wanted to, even for those living alone.
After all if you only make short trips then public transport or a bicycle would suffice rather than an outlay of £6k.

It is good that automobile manufacturers are producing these vehicles.

Citroen's vehicle may or may not have the winning combination; but in the near future novel little e-vehicles will become commonplace, almost certainly!

Some people consider they are 'past it', when it comes to cycling. Not everyone is prepared to stand around at a bus stop in bad weather either.

Occasional long trips can always be made by train. There is definitely an untapped market for little runabouts like this. Even as a second car, to avoid getting the big gas-guzzler out to nip into town etc.

When compared to motability scooters it isn't much more, the one on the link is aimed at the 'pizza delivery' market with only 1 seat to increase the cargo area but I don't doubt they will soon be marketing a 2 seat option with enough space for a bit of shopping, the beauty of it is that you are not reliant on a specialist charging point so you can visit the rellys and top up with their leccy!

The problem is that regardless of whether a car is electric or petrol driven, they all need roads to be driven on. Whilst we have a national government and an equally enthusiastic local council who are determined to reduce our road system in favour of - often unused - cycle tracks the future for all car drivers looks bleak.

No worries mate. When bikes have taken over the roads, you'll still have the motorways to enjoy driving up and down on.

It's not the Council, they only act under Government instructions, the only advantage to the Council is they can allocate a certain amount of overhead to a project and possibly remedial works which need doing anyway.

One motor manufacturer's 'trail balloon ' initiated this thread. Meanwhile, it is interesting to note different manufacturers' prototypes and what that might say about their respective expectations for motoring in the near future.

    Cargo pod — Is this
    the future of Uber Eats?
"By removing the rear seat, Citroen’s designers made room for a neat polypropylene pod that can hold up to 260-litres or 140kgs of cargo... which means plenty of hot take-away meals. By utilising storage elsewhere in the car, the My Ami Cargo can carry a total of around 400-litres, slightly more than the amount of space on offer in the boot of a Ford Focus."

This is not futuristic. It boasts a tight turning radius; by implication possibly useful in high-density, inner urban high traffic areas — that is to say, NOT Southport. The comparison with a mobility carriage is not too far-fetched. [Observe the bizarre customizations on display outside a Lord Street purveyor of mobility carriages.] But really you'd have to suppose James Dyson could come up with a better design, if he deigned to do so.

Fully autonomous vehicles have slipped out of the headlines. The near-future looks set to be dominated by vehicles with a multitude of costly driver-assist gadgets on one hand and a good deal of improvisation of short-distance personal transport — think e-scooters through electric mini-buses.
