Britannia Hotels has bought the historic Royal Clifton Hotel on The Promenade – and is now advertising a number of jobs at the landmark venue.

Britannia already operates The Prince of Wales on Lord Street, The Scarisbrick Hotel on Lord Street and Pontins holiday park in Ainsdale, as well as The Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool city centre.

The Royal Clifton Hotel, formerly operated by Best Western, is on the Promenade overlooking the Marine Lake, Kings Gardens while only 100 metres from Lord Street. The business, which traded within a franchise agreement under the SureStay Hotel Collection by Best Western, also operated as a wedding and events venue.

The 120-bedroom property was put up for sale in June 2020 for £6million, in a sale handled by Christie & Co; it's not yet known how much the hotel was finally sold for.

Built by architect Thomas Withnell in the 1850s, it is a landmark grade II Listed building, boasting nine function rooms catering up to 300 people as well as a leisure club & health spa facility.

A Britannia spokesperson said: “We are pleased to be recruiting for a number of roles in Southport! There are opportunities at three of our hotels in a variety of roles.

“To meet the best candidates for these roles, we are hosting a recruitment day at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Please bring your printed CV with you – there is no need to confirm your attendance in advance.”

These are the details of the recruitment day and the roles available:

    When: Tuesday 18th May, between 10am – 3pm

Where: Prince of Wales Hotel, Lord Street, Southport, PR8 1JS

WHICH magazine rates Britannia as the worst hotel chain in the U.K. The Scarisbrick and Prince of Wales hotels stand testament to that. The Royal Clifton will become another doss house, another nail in Southport’s coffin.

    What depressing news.

The operator of facilities not suitable for refugees buys another major hotel.

Very sad. What once were two of Southport’s finest hotels, now seem doomed to fall into a similar state of disrepair as The Scarisbrick. No wonder there’s so many vacancies, I believe they’re a terrible company to work for too.

I would have thought they would be advertising for a crew of cleaners before anything else, those places need a deep clean I bet. The beds and bedding will want replacing to start with and the Scarisbrick hotel was dark and dismal 10 yrs ago Lord knows what it’s like in there now and it’s always been a breeding ground for norovirus. Maybe these places will catch fire and pay for themselves while the latest residents escape deportation and go back to planting and cutting on the fields.

Wrong. The latest residents were failed asylum seekers. Unable to transport them back to their original countries of origin because of the pandemic, the home office homed them here. With the lifting of restrictions this has meant they’ve been moved back home. Do keep up!

Wrong, They were awaiting processing for asylum, if they fail they were moved out.
    Do keep up!

Either moved out and deported or moved out to run off and work in backs of restaurants or privately and quietly for farmers or agencies or to make their own way under the radar pickpocketing, robbing houses and snatching purses ( like the chap on here and when they catch him he will be dressed the same ) ( if you know what you are looking for you can spot the pickpocket lookouts on Lord st ) cos that’s all they can do to survive, even landlords need proof folk are legal in the form of a new EU registration code. After all if they are not from Europe they will have to have leave to enter ( from a British embassy in THEIR country ) , leave to remain and a visa for ONE specific purpose and ONE only like work OR study OR marriage or they won’t legally be allowed to work or rent accommodation or have recourse to public funds. The same applies to members of the EU after June 30 th even if they are working here already they will have to re apply ( online and must have been here for 5 yrs already ) for permission to settle and continue to work here and show that they are from Europe and have a company to employ / sponsor them before they can continue to remain now we are out of the EU things have changed they need to apply and be given a registration code that employers need before they can employ or continue to employ them. There are massive fines for employers and landlords who do not adhere to these new rules .
I’ve been keeping up with this for years, I have had to know the home office system backwards and keep up with it throughout my work and private life and have lived and breathed it and married it from leave to enter to leave to remain and indefinite leave to remain to the British test ( life in the Uk ) to full passport holding citizenship and EACH of these stages take a year or two and and the best part of a grand.
So yea I have been keeping up and you’re just a keyboard knob so keep tight hold of your handbag in town.

Spitting the Dummy out! Sefton Council which is directed from Bootle, has shown their envy of Southport on several occasions. Funding priorities allocated to outside areas with Southport given only miniscule funding, incompetent management installed in Council businesses/ events and leadership roles.
Southport has everything that the Joint Council areas don't have. The local Council has a duty to residents to maintain and keep the towns in good order and could have legally and easily stopped this sale going through. Sefton Council is fully aware of the issues surrounding Britannia, they have received enough complaints over the years and have witnessed the deterioration to the almost demolition status, of the most iconic buildings in Southport.
The council must have been aware of this sale before the elections, but held off publishing it until the election results were known. Realising that Labour in Southport is a highly unlikely event - they now allow for the potential demolition of The Clifton.
SOUTHPORT MUST COME OUT OF SEFTON - it is imperative if we are to save the town.

This is disgraceful, how can Sefton Council allow this to happen, like what’s been said they know Britannia’s reputation is bad so why let the sale go through.

I am disgusted with being a part of Merseyside, Southport is being destroyed by The Council with there not caring approach and lack of respect to the residents of Southport.

We need to stand up for this town and get out of Merseyside, we need this to happen, Southport has become an eyesore and not a place to go to because of rubbish and disgraceful Sefton Council.

The private sale of a hotel between 2 business has nothing to do with the council.
Nothing they could do to stop it.
Brittania have hotels all offer the country, is that Sefton's fault too?

Please enlighten us as to what powers they had to stop the sale?

The council must have been aware of this sale before the elections, but held off publishing it until the election results were known
The council didn't publish the sale

It's a listed building in a conservation area that the council created. How many hotels have Britannia ever demolished? None.

Your deranged ramblings get worse. Have you missed your medication?
