Two men aged 50 and 31, from the Bootle area, were arrested in the early hours of Sunday 30th May, following a burglary at the MeCycle shop on Station road in Ainsdale. Patrols on duty in Southport responded and all three bikes stolen were recovered, between the Formby bypass and Broom's Cross Road, along with two offenders.
These arrests follow the arrest by British Transport Police (BTP) of a Southport local man on Sunday 23rd May, for handling stolen goods, after a high value electric bike was found. The bike had been stolen from a bike shop on Preston Railway Station and the offender responsible for the burglary was arrested in Lancaster.
Another male suspect for thefts of bikes from garages in the area is currently in custody on another matter.
We are currently investigating other burglaries of sheds/garages in Southport where bikes and other items have been stolen and we will continue to work with BTP and Lancashire Constabulary during these investigations.
There is however, clearly a need for local residents and bike owners in particular, to take more preventative measures to reduce the risks of becoming victims of this type of crime.
Bikes are a very easy item to sell on, this time of the year. Which makes them a prime target for thieves.......Be sure to always lock it securely to something immovable. Particularly so in town, where leaving it unlocked - even for a minute - is all it takes to lose it!

The D-lock has a lot going for it, but no lock is completely impregnable......I'd strongly suggest a motion-detector alarm as an additional deterrent. They're online for under £20 and emit 110db screech if anyone even slightly moves the bike ('KINOEE' alarm from Amazon £15.99) I use one myself. Beyond that, there are trackers that can be concealed in the bike, enabling bike to be located should it have been taken - but they're not cheap.
