I came across this article posted by a GP in an online national newspaper, and is something hitherto I knew nothing about!

Something the government has planned and is introducing on the 23^rd of June (in two weeks’ time!) and which has been kept away from public scrutiny, is to compel GP practises across the country to hand over all patient data they hold to NHS Digital – that’s everything about you and me from the day we were born. The confidentiality of patient data is potentially put at risk by this move (and conceivably contravenes the GDPR!) as it’s likely that private medical companies and insurance companies can buy or access this information about us. This data would be very useful indeed to for example medical insurance companies in order to minimise their risk, and adjust their premiums accordingly. This of course is all part of the governments plan to privatise the National Health Service by stealth and in small increments (like recently quietly selling a large London GP Practice to an American company) so that the general public are not alarmed by these small steps; we’ve better things to worry about, haven’t we?

As individuals we can opt out of this by writing to our GP Practice in the following format:

Dear GP,
I am writing to give notice that I refuse consent for my identifiable information / and the identifiable information of those for whom I am responsible [delete as appropriate] to be transferred from your practice systems for any purpose other than my medical care. Please take whatever steps necessary to ensure my / our confidential personal information is not uploaded and record my dissent by whatever means possible. This includes adding the ‘Dissent from secondary use of GP patient identifiable data’ code (Read v2: 9Nu0, CTV3: XaZ89 or SNOMED CT: 827241000000103) to my / our records. I am aware of the implications of this request, understand it will not affect the care that I / we receive, and I will notify you should I change my mind.

Like yourself, this information only passed to me recently. I am opting out because I can see so many intrusions into my personal information occurring in the future if I did not. The American laws concerning confidential information are very weak.

I was aware of various GP practices being sold off to the USA, and I believe that I have mentioned this previously on this site. There has been no discussions over this issue nor has any choice been given to the public. This is not the practice of open democracy.

I was unsure as to whether the mention of 'choosing to opt out' would have been accepted on this site because it involves past and present politics that have previously been disregarded.

Democracy has nothing to do with it, a GP practice is just that, a business, it is not owned by the NHS, they just provide services for NHS

Gives permission for healthcare workers to access your records wherever you go for help.
If you landed unconscious in Dudley A&E one link would help in your recovery.

Some data minus any identification could be sold off to a commercial interest what does it matter in health trends can only be used to improve them.

Some folk somewhere are going to know absolutely everything about you, where you’ve been who you’ve talked to who your friends are how much money you have and how you spend it, how you drive, if you have a tv and what you watch on it, how fit you are and if you have had the vaccine or not and the list goes on.

Within the NHS medical details are already available, this as usual opens the door to anyone, how this information is used and who gets their hands on it is the question.

When it comes to the NHS and Tories, trust doesn’t exist.

I don’t think I have ever mentioned it to them no. I don’t really mind what they know about me anyway, none of it is very exiting and it’s probably a waste of electric storing the data.

That is very dependent on who the data is shared with, personal medical data should stay within the NHS, it should not be available to anyone to simply buy or look at for their own purposes.

That's optimistic of you to seek a reply from jonboi.

Art least when Cllr Shaw used to post on here, he would bother to engage, even if the value of that was questionable at best.

I do not see the problem.
Having an nhs free at the point of delivery is wonderful.
The payback is data of the soul.

One day G.p's may be salaried to the nhs not private.

Having fully anomonised and unidentifiable data is OK as long as there are safeguards and stiff penalties in place, problems arise when data comes from many sources and it gets pieced together.

GP's will never end up with the NHS it is too lucrative and there are too many Drs in high places to make sure it wont happen.
