Caffe Nero, Chapel St Closed until further notice

Caffe Nero has been closed for a few days now, and a notice on the door says that they will closed until further notice because of an "issue". Does anyone out there know what that "issue" is?

I know a couple of places have shut for a few days as a precaution as one of the staff in each has been buzzed on the Covid app. Not caught Covid, but been in contact with someone.

Pretty sure Nero is one. Good for them, following precautions and keeping customers safe even though it probably wasn't absolutely necessary.

I was sitting in the Lord Street branch when I heard a staff member tell a customer it was a technical fault and would be open on Monday.

If it had, it may give the coffee more flavour, it could do with it.

On checking a sign in the window today it says it did not have a pavement licence. I would imagine not being able to use the external seating may have had something to do with it. If

Also, Roman are closing down and Tesco are taking over on the corner of the station entrance. The old pound shop on Chapel Street is closing and there is yet another Turkish take away opening in the old British Home Stores building as well as a Turkish chain take away opening in the old MacDonald's building called German Kebab, which makes five Turkish Kebab shops in close vicinity to one another. There are already three on Eastbank Street with a constant aroma of stale cooking fat. There are two Turkish Fish and Chip shops on Lord Street and a Turkish cafe in the entrance to the station. All of whom are selling Halal meat that is not popular with the British. I am given to understand that all the Turkish barbers lost a lot of money over the pandemic, and are now turning their hand to selling kebabs. Modern Southport.

It's a franchise which started in Germany not Turkey. The clue is in the name. They don't have any stores in Turkey.

On the contrary evidently they must be popular. But where is this Turkish cafe in the station entrance?

True - it was started in Germany by a Turkish guy who has recently died.

Popular? You don't know much do you?

Station? just past Wilkinsons on the left.

I've just come back from town, there are no empty shops in the station precinct, the only ones in the area are the old charity shop on London St and a shop next to Tui which has a 'For Sale' sign, neither have any signs of being opened as anything nor any 'Planning Application' notices.

Cafe Nero was open today and with chairs outside.

Now correct me if I am wrong, OK? The majority of local people cannot afford to open even a small shop in the town because the risks are so high, due to so small a footfall. Have you never wondered why there are around 20% of the shops that are open are those owned by one nation of people only? If you were going to open a business which you wanted to be profitable, one to cover all your rent, business taxes and overheads- where would YOU open a shop?

Let me expand on that - to run a business from the old British Home Stores shop - you would need to cover an annual rent of £20,000. You would then need to cover business rates of £8000, for two staff members £24,000, for utilities, £2000, Insurance £5,000. and then you would need to purchase your initial stock. That is £59,000 before stock is taken into consideration. You would need to clear £1,200 EVERY week, winter and summer. You would need an initial lay out of £30,000 minimum. It would depend on what goods/services you are offering of course and whether there are other outlets offering the same goods/services in the local area, and how much interest there would be in what you are offering. Now given the choice of a quiet town, where footfall is limited and where the rents are as high as a city and where business rates are higher than a city - selling specialist goods along with half a dozen others selling the same - would you choose a quiet town like Southport or a city to open your business?

    No. Nor do I care.

But I do wonder what kind of batshit racist arseholery leads you to the conclusion that a full fifth of all shops in Southport are owned by Turkish nationals?

No answer required. The answer's in the question.
