Gis a job
From Michael Rosen
"I see that George Osborne has become the new Chair of the British Museum. He's just announced it on twitter. I've asked him how he got the job. How do people get these jobs? How did they arrive at him? Did they just ring him up? No one's ever rung me to offer me a job like that. I didn't invent austerity, though."
Any thoughts?

The old story - it's not what you know, it's who you know. Typical appointment made through 'the old boys' network.

Exactly what I was about to say.
Looking at the current crop of trustees, it isn't hard to see how he was elected by the majority. But putting in a man who presided over swingeing cuts to museums is a bit of a head scratcher.
Whereas Michael Rosen is supremely qualified for the job.
Not remotely surprising in the current political climate, though.

Being going on for years.
Blair lands job as international peace envoy in Middle East
Tue, Jun 26, 2007, 01:00
Quote
"The idea of Mr Blair doing this job is understood to have originated with the prime minister himself in conversation with George Bush, who then suggested it to the UN. The UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon is said to be a keen supporter and Washington was reported last night to have mounted "an enormous push" to ensure Mr Blair got the post.
Diplomats said there was some disquiet over the way US talks with Mr Blair were well advanced before any details were shared with the other quartet partners.
Mr Blair has constantly pressed Mr Bush to take a more active role in securing a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
Though his standing in the so-called Arab street may be low because of his role in the invasion of Iraq, he is held in high standing among Arab political elites, and he has frequently spoken of his passion to play a part in helping to secure peace in the Middle East."

Blair taking another job in politics is hardly surprising. Even now he pushes his neb in to all manner of political situations. While he might not be popular, he is qualified.
Blair landing the chair of the British Museum would be as eyebrow raising as Gideon. Supremely unqualified. Apart from persisting in our clinging on to the Elgin Marbles and scrapping entrance fees, he's had nothing to do with museums.
Nor has Osborne. Another white male establishment figure wouldn't be my choice, anyroad.

Rosen BA MA PhD English plus Poet Laureate and Honorary.Degrees.
Blair second-class Honours B.A. in Jurisprudence.
Osborne has a 2:1 bachelor's degree in Modern History.
Out of the 3 Osborne has the edge don't you think?

On a Bachelor's?
As Rosen said:
Michael Rosen @MichaelRosenYes
I went to Oxford, I've worked for the British Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Barbican, the Royal Academy, the BBC, the National Portrait Gallery, the Fitzwilliam, national newspapers...
Osborne's austerity measures closed how many museums?
Matter of opinion, but I know who I'd choose.

Never mind.
Michael Rosen will just have to hang on in there until Labour get back in Gov.

Yes, not surprising at all but I think that was why I liked Rosen's post. It is so unsurprising that had I learned of this from reading the tweet or hearing of it on the news it would hardly have registered. I am so used to announcements that someone influential and powerful has yet another influential and powerful position I don't stop to ask how come? Rosen is good at highlighting reality isn't he? Good at reminding us of how things are and how things work.

The obvious question for me is...
What first attracted you to the Lefty Michael Rosen?

So you'd choose party first, again?
Nothing to do with ability or experience, just 'left' and 'right'.
An award winning author, entrenched in the arts, experienced in working for museums and galleries, children's laureate.
Or Austerity Osborne.
I take it if (God forbid) you're ever in hospital, you'll have a 'Nil by Labour' sign above your bed in case a left winger tries to treat you?
Bless you. As always, your opinion is as valid as any.

The harsh reality is these jobs need a well-connected high profile figure.
Dolly or "Local" from Southport simply don't have the necessary door opening skills.
