Merseyside Police would like to reassure the public that high visibility patrols will continue to be present in busy areas across Merseyside over the weekend.

The forecast for the weekend is for good weather and people are expected to be out and about on the region’s beaches, parks and public areas socialising and watching the Euro 2020 games.

The city’s bars and outdoor areas are also expected to be busy but our message is - it is business as usual for us and action will be taken when criminal or antisocial behaviour is detected.

We have introduced a Dispersal Zone in Liverpool city centre today, Friday 25 June, following reports of anti-social behaviour. It will run from 3pm today until 3pm on Sunday 27 June, and officers will be in the area to provide a visible presence and deal with any incidents.

Chief Inspector Matthew Moscrop said: "We understand that it is has been a frustrating few months for people and that they are keen to get out and socialise with friends and we know that the majority of people will enjoy their time without incident.

“But sadly as we have seen the lockdown starting to lift and the night time economy areas getting busier we have seen some incidents where people have been assaulted or abused and this simply will not be tolerated.

"This weekend there will be officers in uniform and in plain clothes who will be on the lookout for anyone acting suspiciously or in a way that could bring harm or distress to others.

"We don't want to spoil anyone's fun, but we must do all we can to help prevent further incidents and I would urge people to speak to our officers if they have any concerns or want to report any issues.

“As a force we have seen a decrease in reports of knife crime over the past two years, but we must do all we can do prevent further incidents. If you see suspicious behaviour, please report it.

“Also if you are coming out to watch the Wales v Denmark game or any other sporting event and having a drink please plan ahead - leave your car at home, organise transport and look after your friends and personal belongings

“Finally, but importantly, we want everyone to remember that Covid-19 still poses a risk to public health and there are still some restrictions in place. These include no more than 30 people together outdoors, no more than six people or two households together indoors, social distancing and wearing a mask when indoors."
