Is it time for a rule change?
It has always seemed to me that penalty shoot-outs are a unsatisfactory way of deciding the outcome of a major football match. Would it not be more acceptable to have joint champions if a match stays level after extra time? Each team to hold the trophy for 6 months or a couple of years depending on the time scale between tournaments and share the title.
Obviously this wouldn't please everyone but surely it's better than losing the match on the outcome of one missed or saved shot.

It isn't a satisfactory way to end a tournament. Must be even worse for the players, putting all that effort in for it to be decided with a few kicks.
Shouldn't have gone to penalties, I wasn't impressed with Southgate's subs in normal time, but that's another thread.
Not sure sharing would please anyone. Having said that, I can't think of an alternative. A replay isn't possible. Extending extra time is knackering. Penalties are virtually a flip of a coin. Though we do seem to make the wrong call with alarming regularity.

It's not an ideal way to end a tournament but what else can be done?
Options, if a goalless draw after FT then penalties, if like last night and a draw with goals scored then the team who scored 1st is awarded the title. From posts on social media I've seen today then the team with fewer bookings wins or total goal tally for the tournament?

Pretty sure both those incidents would have resulted in a red card in a Champion's League game.
I'd like to see cards handed out for out and out cheating too. Rolling around like they've been shot is tiresome.
Maybe in the case of a draw they should count cards.

How about a set number of games for the final? That way no-one is tired, and the result will be fair. It would also build up a tremendous amount of anticipation among the fans?

Southgate said the players he picked were the ones who were the most successful taking penalties in training.
I would have thought his experience might have just told him that taking penalties in training is a whole world of difference to the pressure of a final and being the youngest player on the pitch taking the most pressure kick of them all.
After his heroics in goal Pickford, having kept the team in the winning position with his saves, I am sure had he been given the final penalty he would have put the goalie and the ball in the net with his kicking power.

It is difficult to think of a better, objective and binary method of ending a match than penalties. Penalty shoot outs make great drama on TV.
To be honest you win some, you lose some. There were several times in the Italy game where Sterling went down very cheaply, when he might have created scoring chances if he stayed on his feet. Falling over at the merest breeze worked against Denmark, failed against Italy. We could legitimately have been asked to forfeit the Denmark game because of the laser pointer incident.
The truth is that given how Italy played for most of the game, they deserved to win. Their fouls were a little more cynical than ours, their fans behaved impeccably.

Penalty's are an exciting way to end.
Rather ditch the half hour extra play before.

They could have had a replay.
If the ref had been bothered about the laser he could have swopped to the other end.
The way Rashford took his kick I always thought had been outlawed years ago.

They're athletes, play until there is a result - a rolling 15 minutes would probably be ok. This gives a side an opportunity to get over the line as was intended.
