Southport journalist Martin Hovden writes: We've all seen the pictures of young people packed like sardines into nightclubs after Covid restrictions were lifted in the early hours of Monday
And at the Prime Minister's Press Conference on Monday, Boris Johnson revealed that 35% - I REPEAT 35% - of 18 to 30-year-olds in England have not had a single Covid jab, despite being offered one.
It was quite obvious during the conference that his favourite scientists Sir Patrick Vallance and Jonathan Van Tam were less than enthusiastic about nightclubs reopening at this stage in the battle against Covid.
And what will Boris do to protect the millions of over-30 year olds who have selflessly followed all the rules and had their jabs, but now run the very real risk of catching Covid from the under 30s?
He will insist that young people must have a double-jab “passport” to gain entry into a club or other packed indoor event. Fine. But not just yet. In fact you won't have to show your passport until 10 weeks from now, when the majority of all over the age of 18 will have been double-jabbed.
Where's the logic in that? A staggering 35% of 18 to 30 year olds are still allowed to enjoy close contact and consume alcohol in nightclubs.
So, that 35% of young people now have the potential to be Covid super-spreaders until the end of September.
Having these 'Passports' is a complete waste of time and effort, everybody will find a way around it by sharing someone elses or forging one, they will probably be readily available on Ebay. Businesses will not want to turn away any trade so will not look too closely and to do so would increase staffing costs.
Is there anyone with the brains to realise that this virus is with us for the long term and the announcement is of a policy that has to go through the normal government systems.
This will allow the premises to prepare.
Yes there will be a hiatus period but it will be a great encouragement to get the jab for the ones who simply aren't coming forward however long we wait with things closed.
