Win! Unite lorry drivers secure 12% pay rise

Lorry drivers employed by Great Bear Distribution who work on the Unilever contract at Port Sunlight have secured an inflation beating pay deal

The 18-month pay deal for the drivers, who deliver soap, shower gels and detergents, will see all elements of pay increase by 12.32%. Overtime rates will also increase from time and a third to time and a half, with double time now paid if drivers undertake additional shifts.

The pay increase has been driven in part by a national shortage of lorry drivers, which has resulted in employers being charged extortionate rates by employment agencies when they need to recruit drivers.

None of this would have happened under a Labour Government led by Corbyn.

The Union and their members should be praising Boris.

The benefits of Brexit are starting to come through for the workers of this country who have freed themselves from the wage destroying EU.

No it's not a benefit of Brexit for anybody but the wagon drivers, everybody else is going have to pay for it in higher prices including the NHS Staff who have been given a 3% rise less than a quarter of the drivers rise, perhaps the NHS Staff should have demanded a 20% rise to treat Covid Patients.

Which part of the 2019 Labour manifesto relates to this?

Right. And there is a national shortage of lorry drivers, agricultural workers, bar staff, hotel staff etc because?

I completely agree that there are many many poor people but I have given an alternative reason for many of thems plight that you "don't want to hear".
Maybe it’s you who needs to brush up on their use of quotation marks?
No where in this thread have I made the statement that I "don't want to hear".

So on one hand you complain about the average joe not getting enough of the pie yet when they do get more you complain.

You could always write to Unite and complain.

Lorry Drivers getting more means more taxes to pay NHS staff etc.

Wages are too low in this country and the poor working joe including Lorry Drivers support it through their taxes.

There are many other workers enjoying the benefits of Brexit which leads to higher tax takes and increased spending in the shops.

Stop sucking up to the multinationals and start supporting working people.

Right. And there is a national shortage of lorry drivers, agricultural workers, bar staff, hotel staff etc because?

There is a shortage of lorry drivers because the UK had lorry drivers working under British wages. These drivers were then told that since a large number of goods are coming in from Europe, the UK would hire foreign drivers. The foreign drivers were taken on but on far lower wages than British drivers and British drivers refused to work for such low wages which would not allow them to earn a living wage in the UK. The standards of driving decreased, the number of driving accidents increased and the standards of the job decreased. You only have to go on the staff sites for Hunterpac, Eddie Stobart, etc., and you will see what the conditions are they are expected to work under. To encourage a better standard of drivers - the wages and conditions have to improve.

Remember the Eddie Stobart documentary? Where lorry drivers were all treated well, the lorries were clean and a pride on the roads, where deliveries were made on time - roll forward to the present day and Eddie Stobart cannot find decent drivers, in fact - if they find any, because the wages are minimum pay and the standards are low.

There are 70,000 licensed lorry drivers in the UK available to take up work immediately - but they refuse to do so simply because of the cr..p pay. Companies who are screaming out for drivers are the lower grade companies who do not respect the staff and have poor working conditions.

Hotel and casual staff were laid off when the lockdowns were on and they are now only just re-hiring staff. Again, conditions and wages have decreased as more foreign labour was hired. As our taxes increase then wages must increase.

Agricultural workers - again if you visit the staff sites, or Indeed reviews - you will realise just how poor the conditions are. There are reports from British people who are working in Agriculture at present and have been doing so for a number of years - who will tell you that the number of different languages make you wonder if you are in the UK, that more and more work is loaded on to your normal workload for the same pay, hours often overrun the hours you are paid for and it is now become a modern day slave labour.

    Carers - similar stories.

The Labour Government way back in around 1996 - to entice overseas workers, made a public announcement which was picked up by all media and continues to this day is "British people are too lazy to work" Yet the British worked longer hours than their European counterparts and the standard of work was very high because they were on decent wages. That lie has now come back to bite them. British workers refuse to work for wages which they cannot live off. Many jobs pay less than welfare benefits, everyone is on the same wage whether they are faster/ better workers or not - so pride in work has disappeared. There are now far more British workers unemployed, many have thrown in the towel to allow foreign workers to get on with it. The result is that a huge number of foreign workers leave their jobs every week trying to find something better or they return home. Those foreign workers under contract from agencies advertising in their own countries cannot leave until their contract ends - but they will not be coming back if the comments on their country sites are anything to go by.

There is a lot more underlying agricultural working than most people know about.

In the absence of Derek, who kept folk in-line on terms of language, could I remind you that quotation marks have more than one purpose. As used by Local in "I don't want to hear", they are known as the self -explanatory 'scare quotes'. Conventionally, single quotation marks are used for this purpose. If Local failed to make that distinction, Derek will return with his cane.

Might I also point out, as Derek would, that 'nowhere ' is, in standard English, rendered as a single word.

A more interesting aspect of English usage - the deliberate misspelling of words such as 'guvvernment' - might best be investigated by a little study.

Now, perhaps we might return to discussing the given topic?

Fair enough, I accept I made presumptions of understanding in my post that I shouldn't have.

I take the admonishment on the chin, the threat of Derek is enough.

    What complete and utter horsecrap.

So the reason there is a shortage of drivers today is because of a fantasy Labour government in 1996?

I don't recall a public message from Labour (or the Tories who were in power in 96) stating 'British people are too lazy to work'. Perhaps you could point to some document that outlines that message ringing out across the EU?

The only time I've heard that is from disgruntled business owners. Oh, and the Britannia Unchained idiots.

Labour when they actually got into power, brought in the minimum wage laws. No government since has repealed that law. If people are paying poorly, it isn't down to Labour in 1996 (?), 97, 45, or Tories in 2017, or 2010 or 1992. Pay and conditions are a matter of law. If employers break those laws, they should be punished.

If British workers won't work for wages that are less than they can live off, good. I don't blame them. There is something very wrong with a society that forces those in full time work onto benefits. If businesses can't afford to pay a decent wage, it's the business that is failing, not the workers.

Every road haulage association, every major food supplier, all say the same. A shortage of overseas workers is affecting the supply chain. Rod McKenzie, managing director of policy and public affairs at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), said the United Kingdom is facing a shortage of around 100,000 truck drivers, 20,000 of whom are EU nationals that left the country after Brexit. He said that increased red tape at border crossings following Brexit was also putting European drivers off making trips into the United Kingdom."If the 'pingdemic' hadn't happened we'd still be in trouble," he told CNN Business.

I'm not complaining about people getting paid more I'm merely pointing out the injustice of the NHS staff having rises of 2 & 3% imposed on them as a 'Reward' for there work over the last 18 months when wages are rising far faster.
I have yet to hear of a single benefit of Brexit apart from the fish who are happier.
