Emma got her exam results a few days before the just finished US Open. The two weeks she is speaking about were at Wimbledon in July, her first tournament this year.

Getting the facts correct is important, so why you think she should have won Wimbledon is, as I said, somewhat illogical.

No, merely putting the record straight. Remember the last time Emma appeared at Wimbledon before this year was two years ago when she was 16 (a junior player) - last year's Wimbledon tournament was cancelled at least two months before its usual July dates, along with many others here and abroad.

In fact this year's Wimbledon was the first time the vast majority had even heard of her....

Apart from any tax liabilities, Emma will have to meet the costs of her coach and support team, plus travel, accommodation etc out of her winnings which, until Wimbledon a few weeks ago, were very modest.

In fact the backing of the LTA and the Amazon financial support for young future tennis stars will have proved a vital part of her progress.

Thanks, but I don't know if I would go that far! I've a few areas of expertise, and taxation is one of them... beyond Googling the US federal tax rate!

It's a shame that a young woman's extraordinary talent, and the pure joy you can see that she gets from the game, is sullied by the introduction of financial gain and speculation on future tax avoidance. Watching her play was incredible. And her smile lit up Arthure Ashe Stadium like I've never seen before. She's unspoiled by it all, let Emma and her audience enjoy the moment.

I think you'll find that most lefty losers, and a fair few right wingers as well, object to millionaires shifting their wealth to offshore tax havens. That's not quite the same as wanting them to pay higher taxes. It's wanting them to pay taxes in the country that they were earned.

Your initial comment suggests that Emma would soon be joining their ranks, which, when it comes to her earnings from tennis, she clearly cannot do... ever.

She will pay a 30% flat rate of federal income tax in the US ($360,000). NY State has a progressive tax system, she will pay an average 7% state income tax rate ($84,000) Had she earned $1,200,000 in the UK, which also has a progressive tax system, she would have had to pay an average 44% tax rate ($528,000) As the total US taxes paid will be $84,000 less than they would have been if taxed in the UK, Emma will be liable to pay $84,000 tax in the UK. After income taxes, but before any other statutory deductions that you may have, she will net $672,000. Not so much a millionaire now, eh?

There's fishing, and there's desperation for any kind of response so he can go through his list of usual, repetitive insults.

I know threads veer off into all sorts of side roads and subjects, and I know a couple of posters will try anything to scream 'whatabout Labour' (just as I rarely miss an opportunity to have a pop at the government), but trying to shoehorn a sneer at the left on this thread is just tragic.
