Update from Sefton Council today Tuesday September 14th regarding work to repair the damage to the Pier that occured last Tuesday September 7th when a lorry was in collision with the Pier causing damage.
“Following an inspection on Monday, September 13, repair and restoration works will continue to take place on the underside of Southport Pier.
“This means Marine Drive will remain closed until works are completed. While we apologise for any delays these essential works may cause, the safety of our pedestrians and road users remains paramount.”

Before a fabricator can commence work on the pier they will have to submit method statements and detailed procedures on how they intend to proceed. When these method statements and procedures are accepted and a price is agreed an order will be placed. The fabricator then has to get the necessary materials and the correct grades of steel as this is a listed structure . If any welding is to take place the welders will need the correct "Welder Procedures" and "Approvals" for welding in the overhead position. It all has to be done in accordance with a certain British standard BS EN 1990.

Besides two of the cross members it would appear that the additional steelwork particularly the longitudinal beams are starting to delaminate in other areas away from the damaged section. The rest of the Pier looks OK just the bridge section over the road
