This is it, the Council will have to repay the original grant they received for the lanes. It will also cost them money to remove them.....two lots of expense for local ratepayers to shoulder - and absolutely nothing to show for it!

This won’t happen in Southport, mainly because Sefton Councillors, unlike those in Brighton and Hove, aren’t interested in the wishes of their constituents. Southport residents, unhappy with the cycle lanes, will only strengthen the resolve of Bootle based Councillors to keep them in place.

Southport used to feature among the top ten Seaside Resorts in the UK - under Sefton Council, Southport is now rated 87th out of 100 seaside resorts in the UK. What a hell of a come down and still people do not realise why we must come out of Sefton.

It's 31st out of 378 here

Any evidence of your claim it was once in the top 10?
Did such polls even exist before we joined Sefton?

The Council should have properly evaluated public opinion BEFORE going ahead with the cycle lanes
Here in Southport the cross town “family friendly” cycling scheme will just go ahead with no regard for the results of the recent “opinion” consultation - we can at least be sure of that …

Perhaps they should, but let's not forget the town voted in a Green M.P. Because of that, Councillors may have expected a majority of the public would support the measures.
The problem with seeking the opinion of the general public for cycle-infrastructure, is that more people drive than cycle. So nine times out of ten, any cycle scheme will automatically get the thumbs down and there will never be any progress. Roads will continue to be clogged with traffic and the population will be increasingly less healthy and more obese. Not to mention missing the U.K.'s zero-carbon target date, which is steadily approaching.

The Council like all other Councils were INSTRUCTED by the Government to install them.

Isn't there a word for that? I think it is democracy.

Yes it is.....But would you consult cyclists to approve a new motorway?
Had this been a roadside survey, stopping and asking local cyclists if they wanted to retain the lanes, you might well have had a very different result.

They are only asking for opinions and views they are not a vote and not binding.

So you think it acceptable to consult a minority on decisions which affect a majority? very democratic, not.

I think it makes sense to consult the users of a facility, before removing it.
Drivers don't use cycle-lanes (except as linear car-parks!) so why ask them?
