Obviously this can't be done overnight but the leasing companies are awash with time expired passenger units displaced by new stock (Merseyrail for instance). If the 507/508 units were converted there could be night deliveries to all of the Merseyrail system from Southport/Ormskirk/Kirkby to Chester/Ellesmere Port/ New Brighton which obviously would save a lot of current Lorry journeys. A Merseyside Hub could be built on several suitable warehouse sites and distributed by train during the night.
Intermodal Rail Operation to Service Urban Centre Parcel Deliveries - Latest industry shipping news from the Handy Shipping Guide
It's not new, 60 years ago when I sat on the front wall collecting train numbers there was an electric unit that was based at Meols Cop Shed that took parcel deliveries around the Liverpool area, Local stuff like that probably would not be economical or efficient what is needed is long distance bulk deliveries being taken off the motorways and only on the road for 'Last Mile' delivery. Things like containers from Liverpool docks going to West Yorkshire, rail it to Leeds and the deliver locally by road, Grain from Seaforth going to Kelloggs in Manchester - there's a rail track right outside, the finished product could be distributed by rail as well.

We are currently suffering from record fuel prices but the price of crude oil has only just reached the level it was 3 years ago ($84) and is still nowhere near the 2012-14 levels when it was constantly above that level by upto 50% reaching almost $130 resulting in a pump price of 138p, the fuel duty was the same as today.
So are we being ripped of by the oil companies and garages, taking out the cost of the oil and taxes other costs cannot possibly have escalated that much.

When you're watching the lovely, fluffy and cosy documentary about a homely, family run service station - Tebay on the M6 - thinking - ooh, aren't they smashing.
Might be worth considering what I saw there this morning - diesel at £1:60.9 a litre. Bit steep methinks

From what I understand, most of the motorway petrol stations are concessions owned or managed by the multi-national fuel providers, and what they charge for fuel is nothing to do with the actual owners of the service station itself. I think its Esso at Teebay but I may be wrong?

The switch from rail to road freight was first started almost 60 years ago by the then Government because it was more practical to do so, particularly with the arrival of motorways.
The Beeching report was the start of the initial intention, closing down many unprofitable lines (along with some profitable ones as well).
the procdure was extremely flawed and land sold off immediately so nobody could reopen the lines successfully.
Transport Minster at the time Ernest Marple who owned Marples Ridgway road building company
Harold wilson promised to halt railway closeures and won the 1964 General election on the back of it, then backtracked and closed mor railways than the conservatives.
The biggest challenge for the rail network is coverage, or the lack of it. While roads link almost every destination in the UK, rail is only beneficial to those close to the tracks.
The Railways had there own delivey network, (Google Scamell Mechanical Horse) also goods staions across the country (Kennsinton road Station for instance)
There is a new venture being rolled out on the Railway using former passenger stock converted to carry goods in roll on roll off cages which for a town like Southport where the station is in the middle of town and the deliveries for a lot of shops could come to the Station and be delivered by electric vehicles.
Which is an excellent idea electric veichles at the moment are ideally suited to short range delivery runs from a central hub, also silent for night time deliverys keeping trafic off the roads in daytime.
