An inspirational Ormskirk charity is one of the big winners as the Whitemoss Community Fund reaches a major milestone.
It's now awarded an amazing £1million to local good causes with the total reached when the latest six successful groups received the good news that they were to receive a share of the windfall earlier this year.
The latest round of awards saw the six deserving local schemes scoop £125,102 in grant support.
They are: - St James Church Westhead who can complete their roof project thanks to a grant of £20,578 - Christ Church Aughton who'll use a grant award of £12,230 to create a community garden adjacent to the church - WeAreHopeSt will transform an unused unit in Ormskirk town centre into a Community Café and Drop-in Centre with the help of a £25,000 grant from the Fund. - Knowsley Council secured £24,900 to improve Littledale Meadow, near Kirkby. - Parbold WI Hall will receive £25,000 to kick-start their fundraising drive for their toilet improvement project. - The Greenhill Community Hub Ltd will continue their refurbishment programme and replace worn flooring with an award of £17,394.
Revd Sarah O'Donoghue, vicar at Christ Church said: “We are delighted to receive the grant to turn an area of waste land into a beautiful garden which we hope will be enjoyed by the whole community for many years to come.
“This award is very timely as we gather people across the generations to help build the community garden. Working together to support people’s wellbeing post Covid as well as offering a place of reflection and contemplation for all those wishing to process all that has happened during the pandemic. The grant award will enable the community garden to be a focal point for the community.”
Sheila Byrne, CEO at Ormskirk's WeAreHopeSt (pictured) said: “I’m delighted and so excited to have our cause selected to receive this grant!
"As co-founders and professionals afflicted by mental health, our passion is to ensure every individual has a safe, welcoming and vibrant space in their community where they can come together to participate in free activities, or simply have refreshments. The impact this grant will have on the local community and further afield will be phenomenal.”
Funding for the Whitemoss Community Fund is provided from the Whitemoss landfill site in Skelmersdale through the Landfill Communities Fund. Veolia, the UK’s leading resource management company acquired Whitemoss Landfill in January 2019.
Mark Langabeer, general manager, landfill said: “Veolia look forward to continuing the great work that has been achieved through the Whitemoss Community Fund, and we hope the Fund will encourage even more worthy applications.”
The next application deadline is November 3 (decisions January 2022). Grants of between £5,000 and £25,000 are available for community projects in the funding area. Visit www.grantscape.org.uk or call 01908 247630 for more details.
