Where are they located?
Orwell said "If there is hope, it lies in the proles." Whilst champagne socialists see diversity idealised at university, the common folk experience it first hand in their neighbour hoods.

Could it be that people were taking food parcels out to the needy or that people had borrowed a car to collect from the food bank?

Oh dear, didn’t they look “poor” enough for you? Where you expecting them to turn up dressed in rags and with no shoes on their feet?
Food banks are for anyone struggling to put food on the table. Could be a family on Universal Credit who depend on the car for transport for reasons unknown to you, or perhaps a kind neighbour or relative was providing transport.

The way it is going some families will have to give up smoking, their phones, cars, drinking, netflix and Sky

So if you lost your job would you sell your car which would reduce your employment prospects?

Yes, but why would it reduce my employment prospects ?
There are bus and train services for out of Southport vacancies, and the good old pushbike or bus for local vacancies

Why rule yourself out of employment opportunities that are not served by train or bus or near enough to cycle to? Or night work that starts or finishes when public transport isn't running?
Or say you've got to get the kids to school on the way to work which would be impractical or impossble by public transport.
