Not a Tory fan, but this is a horrible incident, there isn’t, nor never will be any excuse or reason for this type of action irrespective of political persuasion.

RIP sir, let’s not forget he leaves a family behind.

A Conservative MP has been stabbed multiple times in an incident at his constituency surgery and a man has been arrested.
Sir David Amess, who represents Southend West in Essex, was attacked on Friday afternoon at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

Deeply worrying time for ALL MP’s

    Condolences to his family.

    R.I.P. Condolences to his family.

Less than a couple of weeks ago, Iain Duncan Smith was followed by a group of people on the street, and was reportedly called among other things, "Tory scum", before one of the group tried to hit him on the back of the head with a heavy traffic cone. Obviously, if the attempted assault had been successful, it could have seriously injured him or killed him.

I see there's people on Twitter referencing 'Tory Scum' while shamelessly trying to justify or play down the murder, and others saying that while they disagree with what happened they understand why people are angry, and others are commenting that David Amess couldn't have been such a lovely person (among other tributes he's received) seeing as he was a Tory MP.

After years of Tories being called scum and murderers and Nazis and vermin etc is it really that surprising something like this has happened? Shocking but not overly surprising.

The left seem to regularly be calling out the right for setting people against each other and being hateful etc but the left has those exact problems themselves.

How good, a thread expressing condolences for a Tory MP is hijacked by allegedly Tory supporters to have a go at non Tories.

This has now been declared a terrorist incident, carried out by someone with Islamist connections, disgraceful.

It was reported yesterday that the alleged killer was a British national of Somali heritage. If I had inferred from that (which I didn't) that there was the possibility of the killing having been carried out by a Radical Islamic terrorist, then doubtless I would have been accused of being Islamophobic etc. Subsequently it was reported that police have discovered a possible link to Islamic extremism.

As I said, 'Tory Scum' was, again, trending on Twitter, where there is a bombardment of ugly tweets including the hashtag #ToryScum about why the killing of David Amess is not really a problem.

That it's been declared a terrorist incident doesn't lessen the effects of dehumanising MPs, nor does it rule out the effects of dehumanising MPs, nor rule out the violent culture that dehumanising MPs has served to influence. That it's been declared a terrorist incident, SF, doesn't necessarily or automatically mean that all the blame should be attributed to radical Islam.

Conservative MP Shailesh Vara tells Newsnight there is "a lot more" aggression coming from the public towards elected representatives in recent times.

"The emails are a lot more hostile, the language is more aggressive," he says.

Vara says he has spoken to some of those who send such messages and says they often think using aggressive language is not a problem.

Certainly, for many left-wing Twitter users it appears the notion of "the only good Tory being a dead Tory" is as true as ever for them.

I noticed you couldn't help but preface your first comment on this thread with the phrase, "not a Tory fan".

What was the point of that? That you've expressed condolences for a murdered MP is not going to lead anyone to mistakenly conclude that you're a Tory.

If someone wants to start a new thread to discuss any issues they have with name calling, that would be fine.

I just started this thread to say how sorry I / we are that this happened to him and his loved ones.

And yes, his political views are the polar opposite to mine, that doesn't mean we can't come together and pay our respects. Just as, IIRC, we did for Jo Cox.

Just as an aside, it does appear to be terrorist related, so the 'name calling' aspect seems neither here nor there, but I'd be happy to contribute to another thread. In the meantime, I'll repeat my opener, RIP and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

Sadly we all know that faceache, Twitter etc attract key pad warriors as well as civilised users, the garbage from the ignorant is not the opinion of the majority, sure I posted “not a Tory fan” merely to illustrate that this incident goes beyond any party politics, yet we see this attempt to vilify those with a more left wing persuasion, I expressed my condolences for the man, not attempting to make political capital from the incident,

According to the news last night Essex Police were a little unhappy about having the case taken off them ' because Anti Terror wanted to investigate the possibility of an terrorist connection'. that sounds to me that they are trying to conjure up a connection.

The MP saying that there is a lot more aggression being directed at Public Officials nowadays, could it be that Government Policies have become more aggressive and people are feeling persecuted and are 'fighting back'?

The South of England is equal to the North when it come to violent crime. There are many stabbings and deaths. Our crime is not reported in the South and we only get to hear of certain specific cases from there.
