You're not entirely alone in that.....a tiny 2 or 3 percent of the population are also apparently 'happy to share' roadspace with juggernaughts, drunk drivers, drug users, road-ragers, etc.
However, the majority of the population wouldn't cycle on-road if you paid them, because (rightly or wrongly) they think it's far too dangerous! These same people are however perfectly happy to go for a family ride at the weekend, on converted railway lines, canal towpaths, in country parks, etc.......Is it that hard to imagine they would extend their use of bikes into the week for everyday purposes, if they could see that safe separate tarmac was provided?

Fyi, there are present-day schools in NL, where it's not uncommon for 90% of pupils to arrive by bike. As soon as they leave their own street, they're onto a separate cycle-path along the first main road they meet. Junctions are 100% safe for them to negotiate too, regardless of age, as bikes large and small get their very own 'phase'.
Well it’s certainly carried you through to becoming a dumb older person. Notice I’ve resisted the temptation of calling you an adult or a grown up.
