Damien Moore MP calls on Sefton Council to ‘listen to the people of Southport and scrap controversial cycle lane plans’ following resounding rejection by residents.
Yesterday, Sefton Council published the long-awaited results of their cycle lane consultation, which took place over the summer.
Almost 4000 residents took part and shared their feedback, and the results confirmed that the vast majority oppose Sefton Council’s plans.
It has been revealed that not a single one of the changes proposed in the Southport consultation received more than 50% support. One question – asking for views on reducing the number of lanes at Churchtown Lights from two to one – saw an astonishing 85% of respondents say that they were either ‘not very happy’ or ‘not happy at all’.
The report describes the aim of the consultation as being to ‘determine whether there was broad acceptance of the proposals’ and ‘broad support from the general public’. The results show clearly that this is not the case, increasing the pressure on Sefton Council to announce an end to the plans.
Following the publication of the results, Southport’s MP Damien Moore has called on the Labour Cabinet Member for Locality Services, Cllr John Fairclough, to make clear that the council will not go against the clear wishes of the town’s residents.
Damien Moore MP said:
“There can be no doubt - Southport residents have resoundingly rejected the measures which the council have proposed.
“The Labour leadership of Sefton Council now have a very clear choice: listen to Southport, or impose their £1.35 million plans against our wishes.
Labour’s Cllr Fairclough, the decision maker on this issue, has recently come under fire for his comments about those who completed the consultation, saying:
“It seems to have been mainly people who fit a certain profile who have responded in large numbers”.
Damien Moore MP has made clear his concern at the slur:
“The comments from Cllr Fairclough were completely unacceptable, and display a strong lack of understanding by Labour of Southport’s demographics.
“It is true that respondents generally fell within the 40 – 80 age bracket, but that is because Southport as a town has the highest proportion of over-75s in the UK, and according to census data the age of the average person in the town is 50.
“All residents were asked to take part in this consultation, and all of their responses are valid regardless of age. We all knew that the consultation was taking place, and enough time was given for responses to be submitted. You can’t discard the results and try again just because you didn’t get the result you were hoping for.
“I call on Labour not to continue to drag this issue out. Make clear now that the plans are finished so that we can put this embarrassing episode to rest.”

The results 'show clearly' that a tiny percentage of the population don't want it.
Which is no surprise, as there has always been a hard-core of motorists opposed to any loss of car tarmac....The vast majority of the population meanwhile, had no objection to accepting the proposals at all, or they would surely have said so! Which means the scheme/s have effectively be given the green light by the population as a whole.

The results of the YSYS survey have been analysed by the Council’s Data Intelligence team. This revealed that there have been a number of respondees that have answered ‘strongly disagree’ to all the questions raised, including ones asking whether the consultees would favour improved crossing points for pedestrians.
For clarity, those described above equate to around 60% of those that responded. 60% just blindly clicked no no no to every question. I wonder what Damien Moore thinks of that?

I like the way this is worded implying that they would ask again and and again until they got answers that suited them to push the thing through ( as the ideas and funding comes from the top ).
“ You can’t discard the results and try again just because you didn’t get the result you were hoping for”.
And using the phrase “VAST majority”, I think someone on here already outlined these facts early on.

All the population could have replied to the survey including those in favour
The vast majority, which you describe as tiny, were opposed to the scheme so those in favour must be described as MINISCULE using your reasoning
You cant have it all ways

Well if nothing else we have learned how the voting system works, if 3% of the residents replied to the Sefton scheme and 2% voted against the 1% then claim the other 97% who didn't take part would have voted FOR the scheme.
The one point mentioned Cambridge Rd/Preston New Road lights being one lane to allow for a lane for invisible cyclists would have caused mayhem, the traffic jams would drive more and more traffic onto side roads, you only have to look at the Junction of Rainford by-pass and East Lanc's Rd that was reduced from 4 lanes(1 to turn left onto Eastbound ELR 1to go straight across into St Helens I to go straight across then turn right into Bleak Hill Rd 1 to turn right Westbound ELR)
to 3 the traffic is now backed up to Rainford it would be worse at PNR going down to 1 lane each side it would cause a massive gridlock with turning traffic blocking progress to have empty cycle lanes.
That ONE point was the most barmy idea I've heard and the fact that the brainless fool with the most to say couldn't even bring himself to acknowledge that was a terrible idea shows what a moron he really is.

Well, the alleged 'vast majority' had the chance to say they had no objection but failed to do so.
If they had no objection, to quote you, 'surely they would have said so'.
So therefore they are against it.
Yes, my argument is as ridiculous as yours, which just goes to show you can read the non-voting public any way you like!

You must think we all came down last time it rained or we are just all thick, I am surprised you don’t get suspended with your many accounts that’s blatant trolling.
I am wondering if this cycle scheme with its million pound or so funding that came from a conservative government on the grounds that it should be implemented ONLY IF the public agree.
Given that the public DONT agree and even a conservative MP can see this against party politics and in the interest of the general public in a town not suited for these proposals ( very statesmanlike ) how is it that a Labour councillor still wants to go ahead with the scheme against the general democratic consensus and is prepared to ask the same questions again and again until they get near the answer they are looking for and a certain poster is going hell for leather supporting an unpopular idea claiming folk who voted clicked no just for the sake of it and those that didn’t vote meant to or would have clicked yes and all the while arguing a dead case against this scheme making false accounts on here trolling and trying to fool posters on here that there are two or three others in agreement with him.
Could it be this million pound funding for this scheme is destined for spending within companies that are headed by friends of those that control the funding and regardless of public opinion need to go through, are you friends with any of these could this be why you feel you need to push this unpopular agenda so hard leaning on current arguments like climate change and scratching for any excuses for this to go ahead.
Maybe there’s more to this and you than meets the eye, you may have people fooled thinking you are just a cycling nut case when your agenda may be wider .
Nash hasn’t posted for months suddenly they are back supporting you, the last time they posted was months ago knocking Damien Moore and the conservatives. It’s wrong what you are doing …you should only have one account .
