    From a cyclists perspective, better a too-wide lane, than a too-narrow one.

Yes, but not at the expense of free flowing traffic. I would sooner be near free flowing traffic when on a bike than risk some hothead impatiently crossing into the cycle lane - and that has happened to me.

'Hotheads' can invade any cycle-lane, regardless of width......Some cars even charge down London St to the Monument, despite it being 'bus, taxi and bike only'!

    Trudy Harrison
    Transport Minister
…I'd like to start by recognizing the great work that [Collaborative Mobility UK] CoMoUK does we certainly need more voices such as yours so that we can design a transport system that is fit for the future and free of fossil fuels which moves us away from the 20th century thinking centered around private vehicle ownership and towards greater flexibility with personal choice and low-carbon shared transport. I think actually the future is much closer than we may think when you look at the progress that has been made in the space of just a year we've launched the transport decarbonisation plan our net zero strategy and of course as you mentioned we've hosted Cop 26 and we're trialling future transport zones across the country unleashing British innovation and transforming inner city journeys.

    Covid more Uk .

It might be best to let covid die Down a bit before we all start sharing cars and what if I want to go to the shops and I am sharing a car ( or a tandem bicycle ) with someone who wants to go to the pictures.

    A) Scenario one - car sharing: Go shopping first and put it in the car, then take a folding bike from the boot and cycle home. The other guy/gal meanwhile simply motorvates to the flicks.

    B) Scenario two - the tandem: Don't use it...hit the saddle on two separate bikes instead.

    A. All your frozen stuff will thaw out

    B. It’s the middle of winter and you gonna get soaking wet so you might as well get a taxi, and if you are going to do that you might as well have gone in your car where there is a space for your wheelchair .

    A) Take the frozen stuff back on the folding bike, whilst leaving the remaining shopping in the car for later.

    B) Shell out for one of those transparent all-weather tent things for your all-terrain road legal (15mph+ 'leccy) wheelchair - and give it the beans!

No I don’t fancy getting the car from someone that’s got out at the pictures then delivering peoples shopping off for them before doing my own stuff in the car or driving a 15 mph chariot home from ASDA in the dark and rain at rush hour up over rose hill and down ash st, cemetery rd, Eastbourne and Liverpool rd in mad traffic, ha no you can keep that . I suppose I could just order online for delivery but for many disabled a weekly trip to the supermarket is the only time they venture out of the house.

Facetiousness aside, your remarks are deliberately obtuse, or else oblivious to the message the government is trying, courtesy of the junior Minister in the Department of Transport, to convey.
What is that message? Accustomed patterns of travel are changing.
"…a transport system that is fit for the future and free of fossil fuels which moves us away from the 20th century thinking centered around private vehicle ownership and towards greater flexibility with personal choice and low-carbon shared transport."
    — extract from Ms Harrison's speech
There is no hint of obligation for you (or anyone) to radically change your current habits. There will be alternatives; unless you are uncommonly resistant, some will not be disagreeable to you. I expect for the balance of my lifetime taxis will be available. The junior Minister noted in her remarks the way services like Uber, with its smart phone apps, have made private hire cars the perferred option for many.

The present Conservative government (contrary to the expectations of many) has (for the time being, at least) an assortment of policy initiatives intended to encourage innovation in transport patterns. Get used to it!

You could miss the heavy traffic and get most of the way, using the new North-South cycle route: London St, Chapel St, Tulketh St, Wesley St, Talbot St. Then on relatively quiet 20mph roads, e.g. via (Upper) Aughton Rd, Compton Rd, Stamford Rd, Bedford Rd....That's the route I'd take if on the bike.

What are you worried about? When we were just kids, me and my mate used to cycle to Bedford Park play area and nothing untoward ever happened.

I am not really worried I was just joking , I spent half my childhood on Bedford park playing football, cricket, tennis , crown green bowling, pitch and putt, flying kites salad days with jumpers for goalposts crisps and pop from the adults in the pub all the lot .

Those days we never heard about weirdos really, the only talk I remember was from my parents who told me watch out for strangers that may take me away and play with my Willy, I am 57 now and still stand at my front gate but they haven’t come yet .
