So for each artic taken off the the road, it would need to be replaced by FIVE 7.5 tonners, and sometimes even more. Given that a 7.5 tonner only has a payload capacity of about 3000kg, and when carrying heavy items like tinned products, the actual carrying capacity would be reduced to about three pallets. Distribution companies would collectively need to invest £billions in changing their fleets, they would also need at least FIVE times as many drivers, at a time when the Country as a whole has a shortfall of an estimated 100000 drivers.

The difference in the emissions produced by an artic, and a 7.5 tonner aren’t that much different, certainly nothing like five fold, meaning that clogging up our Towns and Cities with smaller vehicles would massively increase pollution levels.
Distribution companies are currently investing vast sums of money in making their delivery vehicles, both tractor units and trailers more environmentally friendly, and they are now amongst some of the lowest polluting vehicles on the roads today.

Before the idiots on here, (yes you know who you are) start attacking me, I haven’t just made these figures up, I spent my entire working career (50 years) involved in food distribution, utilising 7.5 tonne vehicles, right up to 44 tonne artics, and every size in between.

Another point is the loading and unloading of vehicles to get down to these 7.5 tonners and presumably bikes, needing people and places to do it.

    Typical short-sighted faux green.

A genuine calculation taking all contributory factors into consideration is needed from field to fork.

PNP the eco-dunce also argues that burning Co2 absorbers (trees) and emitting 750 times the pollution of an HGV in the process is somehow good for the environment.

Yet again you demonstrate your absolutely incredible ability to twist things to suit yourself, rather than stick to what forum members have posted.

Do you seriously think that a large truck would deliver ALL its contents to one shop?

No, they make deliveries on a regular run to various outlets to make the most economical use of a vehicle's capacity.

A Morrison's truck would, for example, probably service the Ormskirk, Formby, Southport and, say, Preston retail outlets on a run. They certainly wouldn't send lots of 7.5 tonne vehicles in its place from a distribution centre many miles away....

I'm quite sure that the large supermarkets worked out the most economical method of delivering goods to their retail outlets long, long before you ever even pondered on such ever changing logistics.

Wasn't it yourself, who said the corner shop needed three artics per week?

Imo, three 7.5tonners (equal to 12 palletfulls per week), would be perfectly adequate to keep such a modest outlet replenished.

No, yet again you've failed completely to read correctly or properly comprehend what has been written.

It was pointed out that the particular shop could have up three deliveries a week by large trucks. I suggested that there was obviously a good reason if that was true and that such deliveries would be part of a longer daily run.

Essential items such as bread, milk, sandwiches etc would have to be delivered on a far more frequent basis and, in most cases, the manufacturer or distributor would cover such requirements.

Logistics are clearly not your strong point - or anything else for that matter....

As I pointed out earlier, there are towns where a weight limit is in force. This is done specifically to keep juggernauts out of places where they were creating problems....Yet businesses seem to cope ok, namely via supplies carried on lighter, more manouevrable trucks.

One for the PNP and other unthinking cycle lane enthusiasts.

Marine Drive is scheduled to be closed from January 25th to April 14th for much needed reconstruction, now this of course leaves PNR as the only route in from the North, this is the MAIN Rd which certain fruit loops wish to reduce in size AND to screw up the traffic lights at Churchtown while they are at it.

Hate to think just how much chaos that would cause with any closure of the coastal rd.

Just imagine how bad it will be when the two new housing developments are built on Bankfield Lane. Southport will be almost impossible to get to
from the Preston/Tarleton direction. But hey, we’ll have some of the best cycle lanes in the Country, even though we don’t have any cyclists to use them.

Main through traffic goes by PNR and/or Fylde Road to the town centre. Those who live in the planned new Bankfield Lane housing development would be able to go via Churchtown lights or Botanic Road/Roe Lane.

However, the proposed crazy lane changes on PNR would certainly not help traffic flows in any way.

This is not quite correct. Apart from the fact that PNR and/or Fylde Road can be used to reach the town centre, Marine Drive will not be fully closed during the roadworks. See:

The havoc they are creating in Preston with cycle lanes as wide as a road is enough to put any one off. The footpaths are empty - why not just widen those?
