A consultation on the Southport Liveable Neighbourhood scheme is being extended until mid December in order to continue ongoing engagement and discussion with the community.

Numerous ideas and suggestions have been put forward as part of the proposed scheme, which is part of Sefton Council’s ongoing work to create low traffic communities within the Borough.

Residents are encouraged to get involved either at the meeting on November 30th or with feedback

    Video from Sefton Council:

The Southport Liveable Neighbourhoods Scheme was put forward earlier this year in partnership with transport charity Sustrans, in order to meet national, regional and local policies to encourage walking and cycling for short journeys, and help address Climate change, air quality, safety and the impact of traffic noise and congestion in our neighbourhoods.

The scheme is also intended to support safer walking and cycling to school for young people.

Engagement sessions, leaflet drops and online surveys have so far been held to best capture the thoughts and input of the community where the Liveable Neighbourhoods project is proposed and Sefton Council has repeatedly reaffirmed its desire to work collaboratively with residents and businesses.

In order to continue this collaboration, Sefton Council have extended the Southport Liveable Neighbourhoods consultation deadline until Sunday, December 19th.

An open drop-in public engagement session will also be held at the Salvation Army Centre on Shakespeare Street, Southport on Tuesday, November 30th.

People are encouraged to book in advance of this drop-in session and are advised that the venue will be subject to covid secure measures.

Cllr John Fairclough, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Locality Services, said:

“These proposals are completely a collaborative process, where we want to work with and listen to the local community to co-design improvements to our neighbourhoods.

“That is why we have extended our in-depth consultation process, further allowing for an open forum for the whole community to get involved in, regardless of their views on the environment, transport and travel.

“We want as many people as possible to get involved in the process and there are lots of way for people to get involved. We will be writing to all households and businesses within this area to encourage continued engagement in this important conversation.

“We are working closely with Sustrans to ensure that we are seeking to engage the whole community in the Liveable Neighbourhoods; from school children to adults of all ages and business owners”

The inconsiderate rat-runners who oppose this scheme, clearly don't give a fig for the safety of local kids going to/from school....Because if they did, they would be supporting it instead of trying to scupper it!

I'm not a rat runner but I'm objecting to these plans! FOR our children!
Eg Linaker school will only be accessible from Duke St via Sefton St, Linaker st or Hampton Road. This forces all school traffic to pass by the schools nearest roads twice!! Please help me understand why you think this is beneficial for the children?

The roads are already manic at school dropping off and collection times so surely more traffic will make matters worse? There is more pollution produced by cars starting and stopping in 1st and 2nd gears, so how is that beneficial for our children?

You have criticised me for objecting to these road blockages so please help me understand why you think it's a good idea, with specific reference to the situation for our primary school children?
    Thank you in advance ?

I accept you are not rat-runner, just a school runner.

However, leaving the whole L.N. area open to through traffic, is an open invitation to those who would rat-run. Meanwhile, many who attend your school get there on foot, putting them in harms way when the same side streets they walk along and cross - can have commuters whizzing down them.....Small kids and fast cars is not the safest of combinations!

PnP - as a non resident of the neighbourhood, your “inconsiderate rat-runner” is someone most likely driving their kids to school before they do their week’s shopping, collect an elderly relative, or deliver waste to the recycling centre etc. We, who live and work within these boundaries, resent you telling us how we should live and how we should change to meet your dreams and expectations

Yes, it's a fair assumption that some who drive within the LN area at schooltimes, are doing so to take kids to school, which at end of day only adds to the volume of traffic. Meanwhile, small kids on foot, being shorter than the height of parked cars, are invisible to drivers until they step into a moving cars path. This is precisely how accidents happen.

Btw, I lived on Upper Aughton Rd for over ten years when a youngster and walked unaccompanied along roads like Hampton Rd every weekday, to get to/from my primary school. So I do know what it's like to be small and have to avoid cars in that LN area, though fortunately there were far fewer cars about in those days.

If every school was of an equal standard then there'd be no need for parents to pick and choose the best ones and every child would simply attend the nearest school which ought to be within walking distance.

Rather than schools competing with each other for pupils and the funding each one attracts. Rather than schools that can't attract enough pupils closing down forever whilst the best ones have to build more classrooms to accommodate ever more children who live miles away and have to be driven to an area where the roads cannot cope with the increase.

Ridiculous woke commie socialist lefty utopia, I know, but there you go.
