Colleagues at Southport Jobcentre were delighted to welcome Damien Moore MP for Southport today.
He visited their new space which will allow more support for customers.
Great opportunity to talk about our Kicktstart progress.
The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create jobs for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit.
The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to create new jobs for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of long term unemployment. Employers of all sizes can apply for funding until midday on 17 December 2021 which covers:
- 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage depending on the age of the participant) for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months
- associated employer National Insurance contributions
- minimum automatic enrolment pension contributions
Employers can spread the job start dates up until 31 March 2022. You’ll get funding for 6 months once the young person has started their job.
Further funding is available for training and support so that young people on the scheme can get a job in the future.

The kickstart scheme pays for 25 hours a week for six months, the youth opportunities programme Y.O.P. scheme, and the youth training scheme Y.T.S. Paid for 40 hours a week for a year.
I enjoyed my time as a young teen on Thatchers YOP scheme I spent the first 3 months in a local shop and asked “hey when the scheme ends will you take me on full time?”, they said no we will just get more free labour so I left and went to work at R.S.Slinn’s paint and wallpaper shop on Tulketh st. 3 months in I asked old Slinn “hey will you take me on full time when the scheme ends?, the last employer said no so I left”, he took me on full time there and then he increased my pay and I lasted 4/5 years till they closed, (well I could sell paint and wallpaper hand over fist I learned a lot also ), after that I went and joined a crew painting the pier, I think these schemes are good on the whole, if employers want the staff more than 25 hours they can pay themselves as these days the kids will be forced into the workplace pension and if only half the staff get jobs after free training then that’s a good thing. Also on paper there will be less on benefits and more paying into pensions even if it’s temporary for some. And even 25 hours will make it PAY to be in work and make the effort.
In early 1980 we got £25 a week for our efforts, today if min wage is about a tenner 25 hours less deductions has got to be better than the dole, 25 hours of anything is no time at all and will get teens at least out of the house and in the right mindset and once you start earning money the more you earn the more you can’t do without it.
