Motorists should not assume the morning after it is safe to drive as they may still be over the limit.

A quick rule of thumb is it takes ONE HOUR for each UNIT of alcohol to be out of your system.

Six pints of a strong 5% lager would be 18 UNITS. A 12% strength bottle of wine is 9 UNITS.

Units can be calculated by volume times strength in thousands eg 12 x 750 = 9000 = 9 UNITS. A 25ml measure of spirit at 40% is 25 x 40 = 1000 = 1 UNIT.

The festive seasons figures are quite shocking.....Last year around 3 in every 100 motorists stopped, were found to be 'over the limit', i.e. officially classified a drunks. Not exactly the most comforting thought when on the bike, being overtaken by 30 plus cars a minute. Having to rely on sozzled motorists avoiding my bike every minute of a ride, is scary to say the least!

You can be drunk in charge of a bicycle too, in fact you can be drunk in charge of anything.

I was making.......

Having a drunk cyclist ride into the back of me, is very unlikely to cause the same body-smashing damage as a couple of tons of hard cold steel at 30, 40, 50, 60 or more mph.
The human body was never 'designed' to withstand such an incredibly traumatic impact!

There are probably even more cyclists riding around under the influence than motorists - I know of quite a few for a start.

But of course you are always the first to blame the drivers of four wheel vehicles than those who are on two.....

Like I said. When it comes to the potential for causing damage, having a drunk cyclist ride into the back of me, isn't in the same league as the damage that ensues when impacted by two tons of high speed steel.

Being left for dead by some p***ed-up fool, who's driven off to avoid losing his/her license, would not be my preferred way of 'checking out'. I can't imagine a less appealing demise, than that of lying there alone on some deserted roadway, whilst the life slowly ebbs out of my shattered body into cold wet tarmac, knowing the perpetrator may well get clean away with it.
