Without even opening the book, I was impressed by the shape, feel and balance as I picked it up; the cover image is striking.
I am honoured to be asked to write these words - on the 50th Anniversary of closure in my capacity as Treasurer of The 502 Preservation Trust I had taken great pleasure in organising an all day bus trip along the route, revisiting many of the salient features.
We own the electric unit that ran on the final day of Southport – Crossens passenger service and which is now undercover in Burscough for ongoing restoration, and the West Lancashire Railway is a subject long overdue for modern publication.
I am taken over by the style, layout and images adopted by the author. There are plenty of words with the selection of photographs speaking volumes to present the reality of days long since past. There is joy on every page culminating with extra special finishing chapters, and it is apparent that he has given great care as to content and obtained images from personal collections of well regarded local photographers.
Overall this book is very readable as a story rather than a pure history. Everything is well organised and set out with in my opinion the right balance of maps, words and images.
I have enjoyed this highly recommended work even though the price is rather high.
It would make more sense for most people if the story included the actual branch line's original route details that are under discussion, rather than the somewhat obscure West Lancashire Railway.
