Will there be a warm welcome for more student flats at the old Iceland in Ormskirk?
Controversial proposals for a mixed use development to create two ground floor commercial units and 50 student accommodation bedrooms above the former store on Aughton Street, Ormskirk are being recommended for approval by planning officers at the borough council.
In September, permission was granted to subdivide it into two retail/commercial units and change the use of the rear section of the ground floor into student accommodation.
Permission was also granted to change the use of the first and second floors to student accommodation with some 23 student bedrooms provided.
The new application is to create a full second floor and new third floor, which would create a four-storey building with the development providing 50 student bedrooms.
In a planning document for the development Heidi McDougall states: “I do not consider the alterations to the façade and the inclusion of a sensitively designed upper floor will cause harm to the character or appearance of the Ormskirk Town Centre Conservation Area or the street scene.”
The council has been told by the applicant 'that there remains a need for purpose-built student accommodation because Edge Hill University continues to grow in popularity despite a dip in university student numbers nationally in recent years.'

Why exactly Roger are these plans 'controversial'? Have there been a huge number of objections? If it means that two smaller retail units are created on the ground floor, which will be easier to lease out than the current single very large unit, then shouldn't that be supported? Or are you trying to pedal more hostility towards students?
