It is good news that Sefton Council have finally seen sense and decided to pause the cycle lane proposals for our town.
For the thousands of people who took part in the consultation it is vindication that their views do matter, despite being labelled as being of a ‘certain profile’ by Labour. We now need confirmation from Sefton Council that they will not simply repackage the proposals and look to push ahead with them.
The ‘temporary lanes’ in and around the town centre now also need to be removed. They have resulted in a large swathe of town centre parking being removed at a time when our town centre economy is looking to recover from the pandemic.
Conservatives in Southport have consistently opposed the scheme, unlike Labour who proposed and supported it and the Lib Dems who still seem to be sat on the fence. We will continue to support residents and local businesses.
Cllr Mike Prendergast
Dukes Ward Councillor

A) Yes, a tactical pause in proceedings is a wise move, allowing time for the issue to cool off and giving succour to the anti-cyclist brigade. So don't start complaining again when the scheme is implemented down the line, in a suitably modified form.
B) The temporary lanes were 'free' i.e. paid for by a generous Govt grant..... removing them would however be at considerable expense to local residents. Since the cost would be doubled, due us having to pay not only for the removal, but also having to repay the original sizeable grant - duh!

We will not just complain again.
We will campaign again.
We will make our opinion known again.
We will defeat the nonsensical cycle lanes again.
Accept defeat gracefully.

Nobody's 'defeated' anything.....It was always the intention to look at and improve aspects of the scheme, following the initial consultation period - that's how these things work.

So you and your mates are just totally against all active travel developments, rather than just against the scheme as proposed. Let me just confirm that … TOTALLY AGAINST ALL PROPOSALS.? Wow. Shocking selfish attitude of a few.

That's what Damien Moore says he is. Against any proposals (however sensible) to make life safer for cyclists.
And it's HIS Government which is pushing councils to come up with Safe Cycling Schemes
