Grand Casino Site
One of Southport’s biggest investors and local hotel group aims to build one of the North’s tallest towers, The Tower of Hope, which will sit on Lord Street and is set to be one of the tallest buildings outside of London. The new feature on the coastline will drive many new jobs and attract visitors from far and wide.
In July this year it was reported that one of Southport’s most iconic landmarks, The Grand, a grade II listed property, sitting proudly on the historic high street of Lord Street is set to be brought back to its former grand status by The Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group. With work having already started on phase one, the plans for the site have literally reached for the stars with grand designs to build one of the North-West’s tallest buildings complementing the look of the art-modern design of the fabulous former Grand Casino.
The other site.

Please God, let it be a non-starter from the off. It would stand out like a sore thumb and is totally unnecessary.

It's next to other tower blocks.

It's in the Lord Street conservation area. Not a chance that a 48 storey building would be allowed.

The report has to be a joke! The Casino is a listed building. In order to maintain it's status, the forty eight blocks would have to be on top of it. After a couple of blocks, it would start tilting because the foundations would become unstable. If they try to build a forty eight story building by removing the listed building - make sure you are well clear of it. The foundations would need to be very, very deep for such a structure - Southport is built on marshland though there is some bedrock, it would likely shift.

It's proposed to be built behind the Grand.

I saw this and thought it has to be a joke!
What a monstrosity! Also totally unneeded. There are many empty shops and buildings that can be converted to apartments with a lot more character than this. Please God the planners throw it out!

THe westerly side of Southport is buit on sand not marshland.
Sandown Court, Regents Court have not fallen down and building technology has moved on since they where built.
But in this case does pie in the sky need foundations?

Hi Robby.
If you stand on top of Holy trinity church you would see it’s a long way up and a great view, when Robby the caretaker ( great guy ) took me up there he was telling me the history of the place and that because the last set of steps come out from the wall and are not for the faint hearted a reporter from either this site or the one that shall not be named wouldn’t go up to take pictures so Robbie had to take them. By comparison the new planned skyscraper is a ridiculous hight, all that is missing is King Kong. It could be pie in the sky like the marine lake project just fantasy .
I’ll tell you what is a great view, next to the casino is a great big block of flats and the top flat 60 has a view out the window of the holy trinity clock and at night it’s quite majestic all lit up.

This would be about 4 times higher than the nearby blocks of flats, so it would stand way higher than them.

The church tower is 142,feet tall and from the top looking down that’s quite high, I’ve done a bunjee jump from 120 feet and that was high enough, looking at the picture the new tower looks twice as big as the church tower. If covid has put paid to a few flower shows and comedy stints they are going to have fun building this. Maybe they will transport the bricks in through town on bicycles 10 at a time, ho ho see what I did there .

The tower is set to stand 48 stories high at an impressive 178 Metres tall
583.9895 Feet.
Orwell said "If there is hope, it lies in the proles." Whilst champagne socialists see diversity idealised at university, the common folk experience it first hand in their neighbour hoods.

Great big knocking shop
Well the artists impression is a bad one then, it looks like the new skyscraper nonesense is twice the size of the holy trinity clock tower when by your correct figures it’s 4 times the height of it and more than half the height of the Empire State Building.

The Mikhail Hotel and Leisure Group is perhaps anticipating another protracted planning tussle involving the Council and probably, central government's planning adjudicator.The process is as follows: - Submit an overly extravagent plan;
- appeal the Council's inevitable rejection;
submit a revised, scaled-down plan; - repeat step ii;
- after several iterations and expense the Council can ill-afford, a central government inspector with the tacit approval of a Minister imposes a design not remotely like the initial plan, but objectionable none the less;
- residents vent their indignation at the Council.
Simple!
