Rufford CE were among the 12 schools playing in the Danone Cup on Thursday, all representing their local borough.
Within the main competition for the title of Lancashire champions were three awards to battle for: the cup, the shield and the plate, and each team played a mini league, splitting the 12 teams into two groups.
Rufford won the first game 4 – 0, lost the second 1 – 0 and drew their third game 1 – 1, losing our fourth game 1 – 0. We were then put through to ‘The Shield Award’, and in the semi-final we unfortunately lost just 1 – 0, and for the 3rd and 4th place play off played a strong match and won 2 – 0 to come 3rd overall.
Out of the 12 schools who took part on the day, we came in 7th place; our players have done incredibly well and we are all extremely proud of them here at school!
The competition itself was a very, very close with many matches ending in a draw - when Rufford played against the winning school during the mini league at the beginning of the competition, we lost just 1 – 0, which shows how well everyone played.
We were very unlucky at times, with shots being deflected and hitting the post but the Rufford team showed great teamwork and spirit throughout!
Thanks again to Mr Newsham and James who give up their own time to train the children.
Squad: Nathan, Oliver, Oscar C, George T, Alfie, Max, George H, Sam, Oscar B.
