I read a report on Damien Moore where he helped one of the local Southport people succeed in a very complicated matter, when no-one else had offered to do so. He did this without publicity or acclaim. It is excellent for a politician to have done what he did from his own heart. Such a pity there are not more politicians like this, they would gain so many more votes.

But Labour struggled to truly seize advantage of the Tory decline. In England they gained fewer seats than the Greens and fewer councils than the Lib Dems, as the fortunes of different parties varied in different parts of the country. Skye News

The reality is that the 'culture ' in the Palace of Westminster actively discourages careful scrutiny of legislation:

1. The rewards for investigating and mitigating the likely impacts of proposed legislation are minimal while the lures of progression up the greasy pole — pay, status, high profile, etc. are great.
2. Obscure procedures take years to understand.
3. Arcane ceremony and decrepit infrastructure distract.
4. Regrettably, the popular conception that a typical MP's job is first and foremost to work on individual constituents' problems is widespread and evidently promoted by a network of cliques including a small selection of elected persons, but also other centres of political influence — paid staff, officials, lobbyists, media.
5. The costly, time consuming and arduous process of becoming an MP severely whittles down the types of people able and willing to undertake it. As a group, MPs are NOT by any stretch of imagination representative of a cross-section of the population. The selection process alone ensures that!

Damien Moore's penchant for dabbling in local politics is not unusual. It has become de rigueur to highlight involvement in local matters and to sustain a high as possible profile in local media (such as it is) and to be seen out among the voters from time to time. An ineluctable part of this process is to nourish party's activist base.

In this context, the business of delivering services is left to Council officials. Being a Councillor is all about promoting the brand of Councillors' respective parties. A particular application of the Pareto principle applies. Councillors raising a fuss over local issues are part and parcel of any constituency party activist's raisons d'etre from one general election to the next.

Oh,Come on! I would sooner have a realist as an MP a opposed to a pretender. Labour have a large number of councillors - you would never know it as you never see the majority of them - they just invisibly pick up a pay check.

Do not fall to Labour standards, i..e.if you cannot beat them, criticise them instead! That is very poor politics and it gains no points at all.
