Southport resident Wendy Winter was shocked at the weekend to find out she had been dropped from the NHS list at her dentist where she been for over 60 years.
Writing on social media Wendy said:
How many other people have received a letter from my dentist Roe Lane informing them that they are reducing their NHS commitment?
I myself have been with that practice for over 61 years and have today been told I must now go on an NHS waiting list to register with them!
I registered with Mr Callan at birth then Mr Baker until he retired and it was taken over by Mr Malins.
I am absolutely astounded at the treatment of long serving loyal patients who have never missed a single appointment in their life.
Just wondering how many others have been treated the same?
Wendy was asking a fair question and received many replies
Yep me and all our family and hubby been there since birth too and his Mum before him, sadly Dentists have been let down massively over the years and it just isn’t sustainable, apparenty you can be a “pay as you go” private patient so you only pay for what you actually need rather than a fee each month a basic appt fee is around £39 and a scale and polish around £55
If the monthly fee covered treatment (as Denplan does) it would be worth it
There’s no such thing as loyalty from these places anymore. Dog eat dog world we’re living in unfortunately.
I'm with roe Lane and have had my 2020 check up '"postponed" every time it was due. After lots of complaining we managed to at least get one of my daughter's checked but at the moment I've got no chance. Like you I've been registered there since birth.
Yes, me and both my children got the same latter through from our dentist Mr Malins at Roe Lane surgery
My own mother received the same letter. If you are a patient of Mr Malins then he is giving you the opportunity to go private with him. If you don't want to then simple, find another dentist. The letter is not confusing for most of us.
The Guardian reported earlier this month
“Dental deserts” are emerging across England after more than 2,000 dentists quit the NHS last year, leaving millions of people struggling to get checkups or have toothaches fixed, a new report reveals.
The exodus is exacerbating a crisis that has seen patients battle to get dental treatment because so few dental surgeries will see them as NHS patients.
The number of dentists providing NHS care in England fell from 23,733 at the end of 2020 to 21,544 at the end of January this year, according to the latest NHS figures, which have been obtained by the Association of Dental Groups (ADG) under freedom of information laws.

That last reply (starting 'My own mother') is arrogant and patronising imho.
'Find another dentist'. Oh right, didn't think of that!
Typical of today's 'I'm all right Jack' society - no appreciation of 'the principle of the thing'.
I guess, though, that NHS dentists just see us as 'patients' or 'service users' and not customers.

Can I suggest that you write to our MPs - the invisible Bill Esterson (Labour) and the almost invisible Damien Moore (Con) and ask them to reply?
They are after all paid to look into these matters. Too few people make them work for their money.

And fascinating just how predictable some of these comments are:
"There’s no such thing as loyalty from these places anymore. Dog eat dog world we’re living in unfortunately."
- in other words "I love to complain but don't actually do anything to help change and improve the situation"
"My own mother received the same letter. If you are a patient of Mr Malins then he is giving you the opportunity to go private with him. If you don't want to then simple, find another dentist. The letter is not confusing for most of us."
- in other words "I wholeheartedly believe in the 'Free Market' because I have enough dosh coming in at the moment. Of course my attitude might change if I suddenly found myself unemployed and with the rest of the riff-raff. And the fact that my mother paid taxes all her life but is now being deprived of an NHS service is not something that really bothers me because I've never really liked her anyway"
And we wonder why the Aussies call us 'whingeing poms'.
