Following the news that 2 councillors have left the Conservative Group on Sefton Council, Group Leader, Cllr Mike Prendergast said,
“I am obviously very disappointed that Councillors Jones and D’Albuquerque have decided to not remain part of the Conservative Group on Sefton Council.
I would like to thank them for their service and contribution and wish them both well for the future.
The Conservative Group on Sefton Council will continue to stand up for our town and we have a lot of serious issues to address that impact the lives of those living in Sefton. We will continue with this work, working hard for our communities, and continue to hold Labour to account.”
Qlocal believe the group will be called the "Southport Councillor Group' and a statement from them is expected on Monday.

Be interesting to see what the reason for the split is.
The Conservatives are now down to 5 councillors for the whole of Sefton - seems Conservative MP Damien Moore's desire for a withdrawal from Sefton is coming to fruition, just not in the way he envisaged
Labour's now got more Cllrs in Southport than the Conservatives have for the whole of the borough.

I will pat your back - you pat mine!
"It was all kicking off in Sefton before a single vote had even been cast. After a series of bust ups and rows in the ruling Labour group, five Sefton councillors - including a number of former Labour members - formed a breakaway independent group on the council." Lancs Live.

Resignation is the honourable thing for any Councillor or MP who leaves the Party he/she claimed allegiance with for election purposes. They should stand for re election naming their new political allegiance. But since that is the honorable thing to d0, it will not happen.

Of course the rather significant difference being that most of those were already out of the Labour party before forming their group and that we still have some 46 Sefton Cllrs while the Conservatives now having FIVE... but ta for letting me emphasise that.

Can understand people supporting the same football team when they are performing badly because all football teams want to perform better and reward their fans.
However supporting a political party which clearly has little interest in performing better for the electorate and is only interested in rewarding its own councillors is a bit foolish - the Labour Party of today bears little resemblance to the party of a few years ago which consistently fought for ordinary people.
Why else did so many people give up on both Labour and Conservative in Formby and vote for Formby Residents Action Group (now sadly in decline but hopefully to be reversed).
Take a long hard look at 'your' party - starting with this article in the New Statesman - and decide if supporting it indiscriminately is really the way to improve things.

It would be interesting to know the exact circumstances that have caused this split. Prendergast has only been on the Council for five minutes and yet is now senior to Watson and Brough. The two dissenters hardly explain the exact reasons for their defection.
