It is a great pity that the minority of responsible dog owners are being tarnished with the reputation of irresponsible, stupid dog owners.

A well trained fit and happy dog, with a gleaming coat and bright eyes is a national rarity. Far more prevalent are dogs that are poorly looked after, receive no training, are overfed and are given insufficient exercise.

Dog owners who do take their dogs out, can be seen stopping every few moments to allow the dog to satisfy its curiousity, or can be seen being pulled along by a wilful animal on a lead, or have a dog that is running wild. These are stupid dog owners who have failed to recognise a dog's needs, and think by giving into the dog they are acting in its best interests. Wrong! A dog needs to be given direction, it needs to know it has limitations - the owner should have control of the dog, not the other way round.

There are far too many instances where uncontrollable dogs have attacked other dog owners pet dogs, most often with dire consequences. A large number of reports have been published with regard to dog attacks on humans - while the dog owner is present! More proof that such dog owners lack brain cells. More reports on pet dogs attacking farm animals and killing them. Dogs attacking wild life and killing it. It is now well out of hand.

One of the worst cases recently involved a horse rider in Wales. An untrained pet dog allowed off the lead ran under the horse and rider and started biting the horses legs. The horse reared and threw the highly experienced and keen horse rider to the ground. The result is that the horse rider has had to give up his business, has had to give up all his physical activities that were his life and is now confined to a wheel chair with spinal injuries for life. The dog owner responsible can just walk away.

There must be dog licences issued. If a dog owner can prove that his dog has attended training there would be a reduced cost. Owners should be able to prove that they have purchased their pet from a licensed kennels. Fines issued against barking dogs, dogs who are allowed to foul public areas, dogs in ALL public places not on a lead should be increased substantially. Any dog owner incurring more than three fines should be banned from owning any pets, or face a prison sentence.

Time to get tough! Nicely, nicely does not get through to some people.

I think the kennels or animal shelters have got their hands full at the moment with all the dogs that people got during lockdown and then realised that they were too much of a responsibility.

At least it's better than abandoning them, I guess.

I do agree that it would be a good idea to reconsider dog licences.

As a dog lover, I agree with many of your points. However, I do take exception to the thread title. Badly behaved dogs are a symptom, not the cause. That honour belongs to the owners who don't train or look after their dogs properly. The same applies to badly behaved children. A better title would be: 'Some Dog Owners Are a Nuisance'

I think you’ll find the majority of dog owners are responsible caring owners. It’s the minority irresponsible owners that are the issue here.
Edit. It’s also a legal responsibility for U.K. pet owners to ensure their pets are cared for, happy and healthy. It’s only a shame that this legislation isn’t extended to cover farm animals as well.

It's the equivalent of The PNP's branding of every four-wheel vehicle driver on our roads being a 100 per cent menace to all cyclists and pedestrians.

The Prices of Pedigree dogs would suggest that being a dog owner is not just a whim it is a responsible expensive caring job for the life of the dog.
Of course like anything else costing large amounts of money there are unscrupulous breeders who mass produce problem dogs prone to serious illness and inbred disabilities costing £thousands to treat if they can be treated.
Having been a dog owner and brought up with dogs from birth I now do not have a dog as I am too long in the tooth and worn out joints after a lifetime of employment prevent me giving a dog the exercise they require.
But certainly nuisance owners far outweigh nuisance dogs.
