    Energy policy

Listen to Martin Lewis's dissection of the shambles the government has now created in the energy market
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44wwvH46-Og
An oligarchy with price protection. As he says, the worst of both worlds.

Privatising energy never made sense. It was a purely ideological policy.
It did not create competition. The physical supply, whoever billed you, still came from the same place. A whole facade of competition was established for the privilege of sending you the bill. Players were allowed in without expertise, proper funding or resources. And ironically you and I footed the bill for all this marketing effort, which had never been needed before.

The catastrophic rise in supply costs demonstrated their fragility. In the case of Bulb, it was so big its customers could not be redistributed across the others so now it is in intensive care and you and I are paying its care costs.

Virtually nobody followed our lead in privatising utilities and transport. Look around you now across Europe and see how much better their systems work. Look at the railways; integrated, better, cheaper. Look at how the French government was able to prevent EDF passing on the full cost of the rises which would pad its profits.

We must sweep away this failed thinking that has cost us so much.

Just for the avoidance of doubt, I have stated many times this and the previous Conservative government's energy policies have been terrible.

Somehow that will be twisted into Boris love but I am used to it.

I have to say I would be very very wary of Martin man of the people Lewis's words.

It's not privatisation that was the problem, it was how it was done and regulated,
    very very badly.

The high prices we now suffer from have many causes and their discussion would end up with the familiar groupthink.

Cables, pipes and other infrastructure like railways, should imo be handled the same as the road network. I.e., the actual cables, pipes and rail trackways, should (like our roads) belong to the Nation. Whilst those who make use of it like train operators, gas, water and electric, should remain private businesses.

I can think of one area in particular that would benefit immensely for a start - the sewer network.....For far too long, United Utilities have made 'lack of money' their excuse for not repairing the countless thousands of damaged and defective manhole and drain covers in the UK.

I notice in NL, despite the ground being soft and sandy, sunken manholes are incredibly rare. Whilst here in UK, it's hard to go more than a few blocks, without your wheels bumping and banging their way over one or more!

Nothing should be in private hands when there is no competition or no competition possible. The railway companies have very few routes where they actually compete, where they do it is only on part of the route and short distances such as Liverpool to Manchester or Leeds to York. Often trains are delayed because a train may be running late and the scheduled trains following have to wait because the operators have a ranking and the lower ranking company must wait until higher ranking trains come through, British Rail for all its faults did try to keep the trains running.

Gas and Electricity companies are only billing companies and do absolutely nothing except inflate the bill, they don't even read the meters they ask the customers to do it for them.

Debatable....A monopoly is always a bad thing, be it private or State. Leading to inefficiency, absenteeism, pilferage, top-heavy management, quality issues, higher prices, poor customer service and a generally sloppy attitude to everything. Because they know, no matter how badly they perform, the customer has no choice but to keep on using them.

Not sure about that. E.g. who paid for and laid all the new gas pipes around Southport about 20 years ago?

A good move would be to secure our own energy and control its pricing.

Industry that produces the income that we all need is hammered by high prices.

We have so many struggling to keep warm yet we are sitting on huge reserves surrounded by sea, buffeted by winds, and some sunlight.

We destroy forests to feed our faux green Drax super polluter.

We import gas and oil from some super dodgy people at great environmental cost.

We have even outsourced our metal production for our fake green badge.

Successive Governments have pursued a fake green agenda and this one led by Boris Johnson is carrying on the charade.

We have the expertise, we have reserves, there just needs to be some leadership.

High prices will not be solved by grabbing a few headlines for windfall taxes.

    Err no.
Competition was fake in the first place. If the regulator had really been tough none of them would have even started with such a flimsy business model. And I wonder who wrote the rules for the regulator?
Yes Drax consumes wood, but most of it is imported from specially-grown resources.
You seem to be advocating a return to coal. Apart from its incredibly damaging effects, perhaps you remember the mass closure of our coal mines, to the extent of filling them with concrete?
I'd agree the green policies are "fake". But we probably disagree about what they should be. Politicians the world over are avoiding the issue because they afraid to lose votes now to protect people in 20 years time.
As for a windfall tax, do you really believe that's about "headlines"? In a time where energy costs are driving people into poverty, with help from Brexit, it's obscene that billions are being made from it. By the way higher energy costs increase the take from VAT. They lied about how the EU would have prevented them reducing VAT ( because many EU countries have done that) but done nothing.

Have another go, that is really really poor argument .

So much wrong, so much supposition.

Specially grown - NO. You (Drax) are raping our ancient boreal forest. If you've never heard of it, the boreal covers 1.5 billion acres of land and represents 25% of the world's intact forest.

I can't even begin to estimate the environmental cost of ripping up old growth trees from our most precious forest. And not just the trees, the forest floor itself is a vast store of 1000s of years worth of carbon. The logging machinery rips it up, releasing carbon into the atmosphere immediately. Then there's the loss of biodiversity, and the loss of unique species of wildlife.

The carbon produced by logging/manufacturing the pellets/ shipping them across the Atlantic and then burning them in Drax's power plants isn't accounted for on our shores or on yours. Faux green governments, like the UK, claim that it's carbon neutral. My a*se in a cocked hat. There are still 600 groups of indigenous people living in the boreal. They are asking the government for a return of stewardship to them. It won't happen.

You often point out the lies your government tells you, this is another one of their big fat lies. The specially grown resource is thousands of years old, a vital carbon store for the world. The same thing is happening in old growth forests in British Columbia, and many other forests in Canada and the US. If the UK rightly accounted for the emissions it exports, you would see how green you are

Drax is a blot on all of us and if I dared go into the history of it we would get the same old groupthink out in force.

Successive governments both here and abroad should hang their heads in shame and that includes faux green Boris*

    * Again I point out that ain't a compliment or Boris love.

    And here we go again.

This shower just turned down a windfall tax. Much rather squeeze the poor.

    Nice

Far rather they were leaned on to spend the money on weaning us off foreign energy and put us on the road to a cleaner future.

A One quarter's bill reduction is simply soundbite politics gone mad, this problem is far bigger than that.

Most of us grew up with little heat and it's much warmer now.

    We need an intelligent opposition.

We need tidal barrages across all major estuaries. To not only generate huge amounts of free, predictable, reliable, renewable, 100% clean energy.....But critically, to protect towns and cities from the accelerating sealevel rise.
