If town-centre parking was free, I might understand the cycle-lane v on-street parking moans. But why anyone would prefer to pay to be on-street, when there's effectively free parking nearby baffles me.

E.g. Hoghton St pay and display v Sainsbury's (one mins walk) free for 30mins, or buy a couple of essentials and it's an hour and a half for free....With a deal like that, you won't find me throwing good money away on pay and display!

The vast majority of people don't abuse such facilities in the way that you suggest.

Furthermore you're always on about cycling, so why would you feel the need to park under such circumstances? Hypocrite.

It's not abusing facilities, it is only using them within their rules.

I expect people to use the most appropriate means of transport, bearing in mind we're in the middle of a #Climate Emergency. Those that do feel it necessary to bring a car with them, will find more than enough parking, e.g. on Supermarket car-parks, or as a last resort at the Eco Centre, where a shuttle bus is laid on for their use.

And you go for a jaunt in a diesel power crate!

    The cap fits

No, it's abusing facilities that are intended for use by a store's customers.

It costs supermarkets and retail outlets very considerable sums annually to provide such parking facilities, so why should those abusing them be regarded as being in the right?

You would only buy it once and keep using it

No it's a way of enticing customers into the the shop, provide 30 mins free parking and hope that they will also pop into the shop.

There is a problem with abandoning any charges.

That is , as I understand it, that the money from meters and fines funds the warden service, which is outsourced.

You might say who needs wardens, but WE DO. Primarily because if you did not enforce limited parking many spaces would be taken all day, including by people who commute into Liverpool. That would be a disaster for shops and businesses alike. Also you need to prevent people parking in areas which restrict access, especially for emergency services.

I have rarely used the 30 minute parking usually because my errand is not in the immediate area and I can't be sure what the delay might be where I am going. So I usually shop enough to trigger the extended stay.

How would you, for example, expect Sainsbury's to entice motorists into their car park for such a reason? The majority use the car park because they are visiting the store.

That is because they graduate the time, the idea is that there is always sufficient spaces for their customers. Other supermarkets have different periods of free parking to entice people into their shop but all do it.

It's only a small car park compared, to say, Morrison's.

I don't follow your logic - if I park in Sainsbury's car park it's because I'm going to the store...!!

Mind you there's the interesting disclosure from The PNP hypocrite that although he bangs on and on and on about cycling, he's quite happy to use four wheels and abuse such facilities when and if it suits him.

Yes it's a smaller car park that's why Sainsburys have half an hour free then an extra hour and a half when you spend a fiver compared to Morrisons 3 hours free, it's all to ensure that there is sufficient space for customers. If Sainsburys car park started getting too full they would probably drop the 30 mins to 20 or increase the spend to a tenner.

given the cost of living ripoff ,towns now need more incentive for visitors .cost of petrol to come in then the parking and risk of fine on top your shop .bit obviuos people are going to be cost active for shopping .80p for half hour £3 for petrol you need to get to work ! then its going to be local and the demon net!best contribution the state could make for cost of living crisis mandatory half hour free across the nation.
