Plans to open a new burger restaurant and takeaway inside a former bank in Southport town centre have been approved.
Smack Hamburgers was given planning permission by Sefton Council to convert the former Co-Operative Bank at 20 London Street, creating six new jobs.
It is further evidence of Southport town centre’s recent resurgence, bringing back into use a building which has been vacant since the bank closed on Monday, 6th June, 2016, one of several banks to close in Southport in recent years.
The Grand will open on Lord Street this July following a £3million transformation, while two new businesses have just opened inside Wayfarers Arcade on Lord Street as building work continues to transform the former Garrick Theatre / Mecca building, with other new developments also coming to Southport town centre this year.
The proposed opening hours for thew new Smack Hamburgers would be 11am-11pm seven days a week, including Sundays and bank holidays.

That kinda depends on what their in-store hygiene is like and/or what sort of animal their burgers are to be made out of.

It's a rather unfortunate choice of name, as 'smack' is slang for heroin.
Or perhaps the owners knew that and wanted to give it a bit of 'edge'.

With the intention of creating more jobs in Southport and attracting tourists, no doubt. At least closed shops are being re-opened - even if it is to be another food outlet.
11am - 11pm seven days a week, is a bit optimistic though. Wasn't it the Kebab shop on Eastbank Street that has changed to Smack Burger now?
One of the shops on Lord Street is being changed into a Climbing Centre - now that is something different.

Why anyone bothers trying to do anything good in this town beggars belief when the attitudes of those above are the sort of feedback they receive. Have you got nothing good to say? Nothing positive? Whinge whinge moan.
Good luck to the new restaurant.

The intention of the business owners will be to make money by selling food. I'd imagine they'd want to create as few jobs as possible in order to maximise profits. The prescence of tourists ought to give them a bigger potential customer base but i doubt they'll be coming here specifically for this restaurant.
Best of luck to them.
