    Sefton Council are seeking enforcement powers to continue the cycle lanes in Hoghton Street, Queens Road, and Talbot St. The current temporary order has expired and a new one sought. With only seven days notice required this could be enforced by June 30th 2022.

    Proposed:

    To seek approval for a temporary traffic order to enable the enforcement of the two active travel schemes implemented in 2020 during the period when monitoring and evaluation will be undertaken. This will inform the decision over whether the schemes become permanent, are modified or are removed.
    In Southport, it is proposed that:-

    1. No vehicles, except buses and pedal cycles shall enter Queens Road at its
    junction with Park Road in a south-westbound direction;

    2. No vehicles, except buses and pedal cycles shall enter Queens Road at its
    junction with Manchester Road in a north-eastbound direction;

    3. All Pay & Display bays on both sides of Hoghton Street be suspended and
    replaced with ‘No waiting at any time’ parking restrictions;

    4. Mandatory cycle lanes be introduced on both sides of Hoghton Street, from
    a point 80m north-east of the north-easterly kerbline of London Street to the
    south-westerly kerbline of Manchester Road;

    5. The Metropolitan Borough of Sefton (Chapel Street, Southport) (Prohibition
    of Driving) Order 2005 (No.2) be temporarily amended to allow pedal cycles
    to proceed along Chapel Street;

    6. The Metropolitan Borough of Sefton (Tulketh Street, Southport) (Prohibition
    of Driving) (No.2) Order 2008 be temporarily amended to allow pedal cycles
    to proceed along Tulketh Street;

    7. The Metropolitan Borough of Sefton (Wesley Street, Southport) (Prohibition
    of Driving) Order 2005 be temporarily amended to allow pedal cycles to
    proceed along Wesley Street;

    8. All Pay & Display bays on the south-east side of Talbot Street, between St
    Andrew’s Place and Portland Street be suspended and replaced with ‘No
    waiting at any time’ parking restrictions;

    9. No vehicles, except pedal cycles shall exit Talbot Street at its junction with
    Eastbank Street;

    10.Limited Waiting be introduced on the south-east side of Talbot Street,
    between Portland Street and Duke Street, limiting waiting to a maximum of 2
    hours, within any 3 hours;

    11.No vehicles, except pedal cycles shall enter Talbot Street at its junction with
    Belmont Street in a north-eastbound direction;

    In Bootle, it is proposed that:-

    1. Mandatory cycle lanes be introduced on both sides of Merton Road, from
    its junction with Pembroke Road to its junction with Irlam Road.

    2. Mandatory cycle lanes be introduced on both sides of Irlam Road, from its
    junction with Merton Road to a point 15m north-east of Ashcroft Street

    Mandatory cycle lanes well that’s a start but how does anyone protest about all this or attempt to stop it.

    Are you for real? Do you seriously think such a scheme would make so much difference? Duh!!

    Queens Rd and Hoghton St will be just as deserted as they have been since the unused cycle lanes were forced upon us by the Politburo.

    Bear in mind it was the attempted idea of the Politburo in London who provided the money to do it.

    That doesn’t mean that the numbskulls at Sefton Council should have wasted it.

    Traffic congestion? Too many motor vehicles clogging-up the roads!

    True to say "…get the roads sorted out for everyone to travel quickly from A to B …" which of course means better provision for bicyclists.

    The. Council are seeking enforcement powers ?, who are they seeking it from?, not themselves I hope and all is not over yet as “This will inform the decision over whether the schemes become permanent, are modified or are removed”.

    So who are they seeking permission from and how do the vast majority of the general public that don’t want this oppose it and have this unpopular nonesense scrapped altogether.

    Or is the whole thing fixed / bent / corrupt so as the council can just do what they want against the wishes of the vast majority in this town and waste funding money for this rather than just say no it’s not wanted .

    Don’t worry about the sea levels in this town it’s famous for not having a sea and when the sea does come in twice a year and nearly touches the massive sea wall that’s been built it’s only for a couple of hours. Half of Southports real cyclists and supporters of this foolish, dangerous and town business killing nonesense cycle lane scheme are setting the town back and those with the power that decided to go ahead with this against the wishes of the people just for the sake of the free funding (to do with as they pleased hiring whoever THEY decided to ) smack of corruption .

    So what’s new, it’s always been the Sefton way.

    I would never oppose the cycle lanes on Queens Road, the road is plenty wide enough to support both the cycle lane and a single lane for traffic in each direction. What is wrong, is having no entry signs at both the Park Road and Manchester Road junctions. Not only does it increase the distance vehicles have to travel to access Queens Road, which in turn increases pollution levels, it is actually MORE dangerous for cyclists because vehicles accessing Queens Road from the side roads may over step the white line attempting to get a good view of the main road.
    However, the idiots at Bootle responsible for this idiocy will never understand this.

    Have you ever been down there when it's at its full height in a storm? Tell you what mate, it's frightening....And a couple of hours is all the sea will need, to breach those defenses and flood the town - what then?

    Free funding? At least it didn't mean an increase in our Council Tax bills, so what's not to like? This isn't some crackpot scheme put on random roads. It's the only safe way for riders to get from one side of town to the other, i.e. from the vicinity of Hesketh Park to the Birkdale area, without getting squished in heavy traffic.

    You haven't taken into account, the fact that the provision of a safe route across town, will encourage more to switch from car to bike for those trips. Not only reducing pollution, but reducing congestion and reducing demand for parking space too - it's clearly a win-win all round!
