All of which are illegal and could result in a fine considerably higher than 1. a parking fine or 2. simply paying for parking in the 1st place.
On top of the illegality, your vehicle will no longer have a valid MOT therefore no insurance!

I got out of it at Go Outdoors in Wigan, after leaving a vehicle there all day, not realising they had ANPR till I returned to drive off.....There was a gap just barely wide enough to fit through, between a row of posts along the grassy edge of the car park. Went for it, squeezed through and subsequently never heard anything from them.
It's worth noting that many stores, inc Go Outdoors Wigan and Tesco at Kew, have access to their ANPR in-store. So, should you break down, have a health issue or whatever, a quick word with the manager or doorman will save you receiving an unjust fine in the post.

As well as the VRM they can be identified by the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) usually visible at the bottom of the front windscreen, it is possible to slide a piece of card in between the windscreen and the dash on some vehicles to obscure it.
Thus making it impossible for the traffic wardens to issues parking notices as they won’t be able to identify the registered keepers, also looking at some of the vehicles my guess would be they belong to a community that, a) don’t have fixed addresses, b) think the law doesn’t apply to them, c) even if caught red handed wouldn’t pay a fine or appear in court (see b).
As for any police involvement, don’t hold your breath.
I've noticed quite a number of vehicles carrying foreign plates are right hand drive.

So you're perfectly happy to park illegally, avoid paying any fine and disappear without a trace, but if you are in trouble then you expect the same organisations to help you as much as possible?
You've proved, for the umpteenth time, what a shallow, miserable, mean-minded member of the human race you represent...

^Lol....I hate paying for space!
Fact is, next time I went to Go Outdoors, I had a chat and told them of my previous predicament. To which the reply was to the effect of: 'You should have told us, we'd have let you out'. Which is how I came to learn that they could feed a Reg No into their ANPR (e.g. of their own staff cars) to avoid sending themselves fines every day.

Went instore and spoke with the doorman, who was sympathetic to my unexpected situation and keyed vehicles Reg into their ANPR system - problem sorted!
N.B. Drove into a (Morrisons?) supermarket carpark in Bath earlier this year, made a purchase and left. Had to return there a couple of hours later, but was unaware of their 'no return within three hours' rule. Only found out after about ten mins, through studying the smaller print on a carpark notice.
Decided to leave immediately, but went instore and asked if they could take me off their ANPR system, just in case. They refused, saying it was not possible to do that instore. I then tried phoning the number on the carpark notice, but could only get a silly recorded message.
So in my experience, apparently not all stores can get you out of it, if overstaying. Weird imo, because what happens when a new staff member starts work? If the store can't override their ANPR, new employees will be receiving fines by the day!

Just sounds to me as they validated your parking most places do this or take your parking bill off your purchase

Validation via making a purchase is as you say, common practice. But there is almost always a max time limit to how long a vehicle can be on their carpark, irrespective of purchases. Otherwise, e.g. at Tesco Kew, an employee at the nearby Hospital could just buy some stuff, then leave their car for say a 12hour shift. In our case, we'd waited three hours (the max Tesco allow) but needed yet more time.

OK I'll bite but will probably regret it! why did the 2 occupants of your car have to wait in Tesco carpark for over 3 hours?

It's not really relevant to the thread per-se, but part of another story.....Anyway fyi, I'll expand on it.
I happened to have taken pity on a couple who were in a tight spot, with no money to buy food and no transport. Seemed least I could do, was give them a lift to the nearest cashpoint and store, which at that time was Tesco, Kew.
We got there around 8pm, whereupon they walked across carpark to the outside cashpoint, only to return empty-handed. Seemed they were waiting for funds to arrive in their account. This went on for quite a while, trying the ATM repeatedly over the next couple of hours, but with the same result.
In the end, it was after midnight, before their money arrived and they were able to go instore to buy their supplies....What a night - doing someone a quick favour which turned into a marathon waiting session!

There would be a way around the three hours, just move onto the pub or McD's carpark or park on SNR.

Yes, I had that sort of thing in mind as 'Plan B', if the doorman had refused to help us. But it was easier all round, to ask if we could overstay first, which fortunately we were able to.

Not so sure I'd have waited, you'd done the good deed by driving them there. Plenty of choices around to wait, inside Tesco, McD's or The Old Duke, 3 hours of my time I'd give them a £5 to get a coffee in McD's so they could wait in there.
