No, it just indicates where the mail from a particular area is sorted which is, in the cases of the villages I mentioned, represented by L40 (Halsall is L39).

Formby and Freshfield are L37.

No way! My house deeds state Lancashire, I live in a PR Postal code which is Lancashire and that is the address I use.

Postcodes came in in the 1960's and bare little resemblance to county boundaries, the GPO based them on the areas served by their main sorting offices.

Just goes to show people will argue about anything.

As for hospitals, I was diagnosed with cancer in Southport, was discharged by Ormskirk to keep their target records looking good, saw a Surgeon in Broad Green and had my operation in the Old Royal Liverpool Hospital, after care was done at Hoghton Street Southport. Who cares where the treatment is I'm still here and that's all that matters.

Post codes came in from 1959.

Royal Mail declared some time ago it would accept Lancashire or Merseyside for postal addresses.

By the way, we are still in the County Palatine of Lancashire and many sporting organisations and competitions include Lancashire in the name of such activities.

It all comes about because people are either too lazy or too ingnorant to establish & understand the distinction.

The County Palatine is for ceremonial purposes only, it has no legal standing. The County of Lancashire on a title deed etc refers to the Legal entity of Lancashire the boundaries of which were changed in 1974.
