Edwin Black, the Green Party parliamentary candidate for the Southport and Northern Parishes constituency has proposed that as part of the pier renovation process, it be powered by and become a beacon of clean, green renewable energy.
Speaking to a group of local Green Party members, Edwin outlined his vision for our local pier, the country’s oldest iron pleasure pier, to be brought right up to date as Britain’s very first ‘Eco-Pier’.
“Creating an Eco-Pier would not only help fund its rejuvenation but set us apart as a forward-thinking coastal town.
“A revamped pier and pavilion with its facilities all being powered by low-cost, clean green energy generated by a range of well-established technologies would stand as an example of what can be accomplished and would serve would serve leisure, entertainment and educational purposes.
“Sefton Council has an ideal opportunity here to improve its somewhat tarnished environmental credentials by ensuring the pier’s future energy needs are met by methods such as thermal and electricity generating solar panels, small scale vertical-axis wind turbines, electricity storage batteries and a heat pump providing both heating and cooling.
“Displays showing how power is being generated and stored in real-time would make for a great educational display for children and adults alike. Imagine people visiting the pier and taking away ideas about what could be done in their own homes and communities.
“And it’s not just about the environment, this is an opportunity to attract funding from local renewable energy businesses in Southport, West Lancs and the wider northwest region. Our pier should be something worth investing in.
“An Eco Pier would be a win/win for the environment, for tourism and for local businesses. We can celebrate Southport’s rich heritage whilst truly pushing towards a greener future"
