Whilst out on patrol in January 2022, officers from the South Rural Task Force have requested a Volkswagen Golf to stop on Southport New Road in Banks after the occupants were acting suspiciously.
Following a search of the vehicle under Section 23 misuse of drugs act, cannabis and a number of snap bags were located and seized and a man was arrested.
A further search of a nearby address found several bucket loads of cannabis, deal bags and scales.
Yesterday, at Preston Crown Court, James Lawson, 24, of Hesketh Green, Rufford pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply a class B drug. He was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months.
PC Sean Dalby from the South Rural Task Force said: “We are committed to protecting our rural communities against the issues that impact them and will be relentless in our pursuit of rural offenders, whatever the crime is.”

The less drug-users on our roads, the better and safer it is for everyone!

He was charged with possession with intent to supply, no mention of him being a user.

And probably T-total as well - what an angel!
Whilst motorised dealers may make the occasional home delivery, their usual modus-operandi is rendezvous with other motorists on car-parks etc, to make quick deals. With this one out of the equation, I can see a good few drug-using motorists going without.

You won’t stop the drugs. Even if he did get a custodial sentence, there’s plenty more foot soldiers ready to step into his shoes. The country needs a radical rethink on how we treat drug users. Prohibition has never worked. Harm reduction and the decriminalisation of drug users would be a major step forward.

Is this based on your own experience?
From my experience of drug dealing (Police not as a dealer!) the ‘usual modus-operandi’ is very different to what you describe, as buyers usually arrive on foot or bike! (But that doesn’t fit in with your anti-motoring stance)

Based on what I've seen.....Car seen static on quiet car-park, for no apparent reason. Another car turns up and parks 69-style, ie. driver window to driver window. Something/s passed between, then car drives off.
You might ask how I come to be in such places? We often spend time in Summer in a motorhome, overnighting in out of the way places around the UK, like deserted car-parks at beauty spots, etc. It can be surprising what you see!

Yes it’s amazing what you can see when you’re a pathological liar with a fertile imagination.

How on earth did you discover that? Yes it's true, we are a family of agoraphobics and never go anywhere - spending our entire Summers parked-up in the back garden - duh!
Fyi, when the 'day crew' of families, kids, ice-cream vans etc, have all gone home, these places take on a different atmosphere. The 'night crew' may show up. Which can be anything from dealers, lovey-dovey couples, young motorists 'rafting-up' to play loud music, etc. Discarded items left by nocturnal visitors, will be in evidence the following morning - need I say more.....

The problem with that approach is that whilst cannabis users might be relatively benign, users of crack, heroine etc are most certainly not.
Also, the people who push the cannabis, at the top of the 'food chain', hurt people. The consequence of this cycle of behaviour is increased acquisitive crime - again - hurting people.

I know that when people report to the police that they think they have seen a dealer operate, they are often surprised the police do not swoop.
The chances are the police know about the dealer, and observe his/her movements because they know that if they take out a dealer another will replace him, but if they take out a wholesaler they get a much greater impact. In some cases, dealers are reported anonymously by other dealers to take out competition. And of course there are the plain stupid ones who drive around without using seatbelts, or have a defective or uninsured vehicle, but carry drugs. Stopping them is just a bonus.
