    Gas fired Power Stations

The rather unfortunate truth is that those gas power stations we all rely on are getting on a bit and we need them.

It might make sense to rejig the market and use our own but that's a bit too sensible far better for the planet to ship gas in from dodgy people...........

The eco-lunatics will try and persuade us that "renewables" will plug the gap and waffle on about some uninvented battery technology.

They cannot seem to fathom that our increase in electricity usage requires a 100% backup to any renewables when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow.

Look out your window today, grey overcast and little wind for most of the country.

Yes, it might be windy later but energy is a 24-7 thing.

We're currently on 45% fossil fuel use and its dark soon.

The Tories have had 14 years to build nuclear power plants. As a result of their failure to do so, we face the shame of increasing our fossil fuel generation.
Incidentally, at the current rate of extraction, fossil fuels will be depleted by 2060.

Strange thing for any environmentalist to hang their hats on Nuclear will be a problem for many many generations to come.

It’s not politicians’ fault that nuclear power is hopelessly delayed, it’s the nature of nuclear power itself
Recent days have seen Government ministers blaming opposition parties for the failure to deploy nuclear power in the UK. But the problem is not politicians, not the Conservatives, Labour or anyone else; it is the extreme difficulty of delivering nuclear power itself. Financially, it is a basket case, and any other technology with similar problems simply wouldn’t get past the lobbyists’ meetings with politicians.

So many are led by our weak opposition's press releases and don't think for themselves.

They've had the same 14 years to have renewables installed everywhere but they are only interested in grandiose schemes were big businesses can make big money. Why don't all new builds and major refurbishments have these measures installed by default, could it be that the big builders and Water Companies who just happen to be Tory Donors don't want it.

Yes...And as we've seen, fossil-fuel prices are so volatile, being subject to global events beyond our control.

Meanwhile, a large part of the answer to the UK's energy needs, has been right under our nose the whole time: tidal energy. I was amazed to see in the Echo a few days ago, that those at the top have finally woken up to the potential of tidal....A fine new barrage right across the Mersey, producing dependable, predictable and clean energy is proposed. And even better, when built will include really cool cycle and pedestrian paths, connecting up both sides of the river!

Don’t hold your breath, how many proposals have we seen for harnessing tidal energy.

Incidentally at what part of the river is this barrage proposed? It won’t be at the mouth for obvious reasons.

Ah, but those earlier proposals were small-scale and lacked imagination. E.g. creating a tidal lagoon, by corralling a small patch of sea, or immersing a couple of turbines in the tidal stream. Damming the Mersey however, takes the bull by the horns and will yield a huge amount of energy, in a location right where it's needed.

Final location will be subject to results of core-sampling/geological survey. It's still early days, but would anticipate a site slightly upriver from the entrance to Seaforth container terminal.

Only pity is, they didn't get stuck in ten or more years ago, when the need for this became obvious. Or we could be lighting our homes by now, with clean home-made tidal power - and riding our bikes literally 'over the water'!

The German people refuse to have Nuclear Plants - they are forever opening new Brown Coal mines, Brown coal is far more polluting than black coal fuel.

How can you say that fossil fuels will be depleted by 2060 and how do you know how much is left? Did plants and shrubs stop creating coal for good at a certain period in time?

Shame on you! Do you realise that one of the largest tidal barrages has been a complete failure. It does not deliver the volume of fuel expected - North Korea still has to import much of its domestic fuel, 82% of its biodiversity has been killed off and most of its fish has become depleted. Should such a structure be installed at the mouth of the Mersey you can guarantee that every beach along the Merseyside coast, and part of Wales - will disappear completely due to the heavy volume of silt in Liverpool Docks that will be dislodged and move downtide. As for the council claiming that the beaches are a protected Nature reserve - well there would be no more nature on them.

We have hundreds of years of fossil fuels under our feet.

Gas stretches out from under our feet and under the Irish sea and will be fracked to get it.

    Coal there is
187 Billion tonnes according to the report I read.
I suppose we could use that and spend the green levy on cleaning up the emissions to some degree.

Were going to have to do something until we have reliable renewables capable of powering our electric future.

Nuclear brings our future generations a big problem.

Well, local twitchers for one won't be happy about this barrage. But it's bound to happen at some point, my guess is within about 20 years time when things get really desperate energy-wise. A big plus with the scheme, is its ability to protect shorelines upstream from stormsurges and future sealevel rise.

I'd anticipate a domino effect, once the first major tidal barrage is completed and producing energy. From that point on, more will be constructed, ultimately being strung across every suitable river/estuary around the UK. We're an ideal candidate for tidal energy, since we have a big tidal-range, particularly so along the West coast, where tides can be up to 10metres.

Not as big a problem, as drowning under seawater due CO2 from burning fossil-fuels!
