It was one of the saddest days in the proud history of Southport - when the town was dragged (kicking and screaming?) out of the Red Rose County and dumped unceremoniously into the new Merseyside in April 1974...
Fifty years on and the affinity to Lancashire is still strong (the town still has a Lancashire post code!) but is it time to let bygones be bygones or are there still proud Lancastrians old and young in Southport and Formby?
From the brilliant Friends of Real Lancashire website: 'Friends of Real Lancashire are concerned to promote the true identity of our county which has been extremely confused in the minds of some people, especially those working in the broadcasting and newspaper industries, since the local government re-organisation of 1974.
The Government at that time stated that the 'new counties' were administrative areas only, and that the boundaries of traditional counties such as Lancashire had not been changed. Unfortunately, the media refer to these administrative areas all too frequently and ignore the fact that places such as Barrow-in-Furness, Liverpool, Manchester, Warrington, etc. are still in Lancashire.
If administrative areas had not been called counties much of this confusion would have been avoided. The Royal Mail has at last dropped the use of administrative county names in postal addresses, and names such as Cumbria and Merseyside do not appear in the current Royal Mail postal address book.'
I was born and bred in Southport and apart from service in the Armed Forces, have lived here all my life. I have a Lancashire accent, not a Scouse one, and still consider myself a Lancashire lad, and say so when anyone asks.

Liverpool, Bootle, Southport et all are still all in Lancashire. The only thing that changed were the administrative boundaries for local government. Merseyside as a CC was abolished some time ago along with Humberside, Cleveland etc and some of the other idiot ideas the Tories came up with at the time.

Lancashire still exists as a county.
What changed was gerrymandering by Harold Wilson and his Liebour government who would do anything to set up state control of all our lives.
We now see the results with the corruption in Bootle Council.
Harold Wilson; the only Prime Minister to have a Special Branch file on him.
Michael Foot; Liebour leader and would be Prime minister who openly sold state secrets to the Russians.
Bootle Council just back from a fraternal visit to the paragon of freedom known as Byelorussia. (that's right - the Putin cheerleaders.)

You couldn't be more wrong the Tory ruled Southport Council opted to join Merseyside at the behest of Ted Heaths Tory Government, this ensured both the Merseyside County Council and Sefton Metropolitan District Council would also be Tory run. If they had opted to be under Lancashire they would have only have been a mere District Council like West Lancs with the major services such as Highways, Education and Social Services being run from County Hall Preston.

Southport was originally going into or should I say staying in Lancashire but the Tories were under represented in Merseyside so they swapped Southport to Merseyside and Skem to Lancashire. At the time I was stationed at Skem and had to move to get to a Merseyside Station to get to Southport which took two years.
Finally getting to Southport in 1976

Foot sold secrets to the Russians? Only in your head I think. If so detail the source

Foot sold secrets to the Russians.
Special Branch and MI5 knew all about it.
They kept quiet before the election so that they couldn't be accused of interfering in the electoral process, but they knew that if he won the The Queen would have to be told and that would have created a major constitutional crisis.
You want sources? Do your own research and stop relying on others to do the legwork for you. The information is all out there in published material.
I'll give you a clue - Gordievsky although you won't know what that means.

Foot didn't sell secrets and successfully sued the Times for accusing him of doing so. Many other Conservative commentators are in agreement that he didn't.
As for Gordievsky, a Russian spy who's ramblings are to be taken with a pinch of salt. Your patronising ill becomes you, accusing someone of ignorance isn't very clever even though perched behind your keyboard you probably think you are.

Think your user name says all about your viewpoints regarding the Russians.
Now pop along and continue your work as leader of the Putin fan club.

Resorting to insults is the last desperate act of someone who has lost the argument. My user name is my football allegiance. You make a habit of jumping to the wrong conclusions without a full grasp of the facts.
